1953 transmission issue

I learned the transmission with PTO holds about 5.25 quarts b ut mine only took 4.5 and it started coming out of the filler hole.didnt see any other plug just the one on the left side middle ,unless I take off the top cover,before I installed the PTO I drained out 3 .5 quarts ,so will it be a problem to run the 4.5 quarts ,any feedback would be appreciated thanks jack .....by ther way it is an early 1953 transmission.

I'm sure I can help you, however could you get a little more specific in your explanation so I can convince myself we are on the same page? Plug being on the left side in the middle doesn't add up with the early series trans that would have been in a 53. What does removing the top cover have to do with all this. I know these gear boxes very well, but you have totally lost me in the details on this one.

well this is a new hobby for me ,so here goes ..my 1953 m37 has stamped on the trany cover 12-10-52,and I installed a new PTO so I drained the fluid from the bottom drain plug (took out 3.5 quarts)and want to refill it ,but the only way I can see to fill the trany is a square plug on the left side of the trany,about half way up and just to the rear of the PTO lever.. ,cant find any other place to add fluid.so I guess my question is where is the fill plug for this truck supposed to be? the only one I can see is the one I just mentioned.hope I explainded it better this time thanks jack

I looked into it more and it looks like it is an early one with the fill plug just below the dimple on the left side.when I filled it .I understand it is supposed to take 5.25 quarts with a PTO but at 4.5 it started coming out of the filler hole.Does'nt that mean its full.does the later trany take 1 quart more than the early one?

You have filled it correctly, stop where you are, it's full. You do not have the earliest version, the fill plug on the first version was where the dimple is making it hold more oil. It was soon discovered that was too much oil for operation in sometimes steep off road conditions. Poured oil out the front bearing onto the clutch. The plug was lowered.

No the later series NP420 takes even less oil. The plug is on the right side of the 420's; it is not used as a check point, only access for filling. The actual check point is one of the bolt holes that secure the cover on the right side. Mind the manuals as they are literally chocked full of mistakes. It pays to get all the supplement change order manuals. That is where you will find all this info.
