Front Axle Inner Seal

Post by bill monahan »

Have my front axle shafts out to repair oil leak from diff. Is it possible to remove and replace oil seal without removing bronze bushing ? Would sure be nice if I could.

Thanks guys. I'm modifying my slide hammer to see if that works. I have my doubts though.

When I replaced this seal, I was advised by members on SS to use a slide hammer. I was able to rig a flat hook to the end of my slide hammer, and slowly worked it around the seal in a circle. Worked fine for me!

Let us know how you do it.

Gonna buy a new slide hammer today that has a hook type attachment. I'll let you know how I made out.

Anyone out there that has a front axle bushing removal tool ? I've tried everything even a homebuilt tool I made. The bushing is really really stuck. A member, M15256, posted that he has one and is willing to lend it out but he hasn't been on here for a while. Really don't want to buy one for $119 from VPW. Will gladly pay shipping both ways. I live in NJ.

lot less money here. pretty sure it will fit. I would ask for the measurements before buying

Thanks for the tip. It should fit my slide hammer. Placed a bid. Hey, for that price I can't go wrong !

If all else fails, pull the center chunk and run a long piece of metal stock from one side to the other, aligining it on the inside of the seal/bushing then drive it out with a big hammer--that's how I did mine.

Yeah, that is the last resort. Hope I don't have to do that. Thanks.

Ok, got those suckers out. I won the bid on ebay ( had to pay $36 for a set of three). Of course it required a 5/8 thread slide hammer, mine was 1/2. Rented a 5/8 slide hammer from PepBoys, free rental. Awaiting new seals from Midwest. I suspected a bad seal on right side because of oil leak at knuckle. Sure enough, there was a small puddle of oil laying inside of knuckle. Thanks to everyone who responded, really helped a lot. Btw, should I use some type of flange sealant on those seals when I put them in ?
