fuel shut off

did all m37s come with a fuel shut off just before the fuel pump?mine has one and I have seen others ,is it needed?

I believe all M37's did come with the fuel shut-off valve. As to it's purpose......without thinking too hard I'd say it prevents the fuel tank from gravity draining all over the floor when you disconnect the fuel line at the pump inlet. I could be wrong, but I believe the fuel level in a full fuel tank is higher than the inlet to the pump. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

You are Correct about all had them. Your reason would be my guess also. I know it is handy if it's not stuck open.
It is all brass and gives very little trouble.
Makes for easier/safer service.

It is also used to stop the fuel flow if the carb. is flooded, shut the valve then crank the engine 'til it fires/runs then open the valve to allow the normal operation. Works great when a hot engine is flooded due to fuel boiling in the system.

Can anyone think of a reason for a fuel disconnect if you have an electric pump? Is it possible for fuel to flow through an electric pump in the off position? I am thinking about safety if working on the engine/carb. I disconnected the old engine bay lines and ran new ones when I went to the new pump.

Hi ZG,

I would assume having a shut-off upstream of any pump, regardless of type, would be beneficial.....otherwise how do you replace the pump when the time comes without draining the fuel tank (assuming your pump is below the level of the tank). If the pump is higher than the tank level then there's probably no reason. I don't know....what does the rest of the crew have to say on this one??

Bingo. Mine is stuck open, preventing it's usefulness when I blew a fuel hose in November...
