I remember reading on here that one of the auto parts stores still makes speedo cables (the driven part). I thought I remembered NAPA mentioned so I went down to my local and asked. It wasn't that the guy behind the counter laughed so loud.....it's that he laughed so long.
Obviously my memory was wrong...........so which parts store is it that still makes them??
Yeah, I hear ya, but I don't need a whole cable, just the guts. My outer cable is fine, just figured there was a way to replace the drive cable. I found that NAPA/United used to sell kits with an assortment of tips in it, but no longer does. Does anyone know the part number for the tip?
Looks like RMS has a pretty bad-ass crimping tool there. I'm sure they don't make them anymore either. Am I the only one feeling a bit "old" around here???
bob, age has nothing to do with it. it's the plastic disposable society we live in gassing off. we don't often notice the stench of it til we spend a few hours with the fully serviceable m37 that opens our eyes to a renewable and repairable world.
a heavy truck shop might be the place to look. if you have or can find a inner cable I can drop a drive end in a envelope.
it seems many R's have been left out of recycling like repair refurbish and restore.
.............................. use it ...............
w30bob, Your not the only one feeling old here. I used to go to the local HD truck parts place in town and get speedo cables made up in the late 80's and early 90's for our semi trucks. So in the mid 2000's when I needed a cable for my halftrack I went back. When I was talking to the guy behind the counter his boss heard me and said if I was interested in what they had left to go out back and round it all up and they would make me a deal. We did, and that was the end of them making speedo cables, and now I have a stash of parts. If RMS can't help you out I may have the parts in stock for one. You can still get some of the tips and such, just not so cheap any more.
If you have the end for the TC, go buy a universal 110" cable kit, cut it to the correct length & crimp the TC end on. I had no way to crimp mine so I used the 6 minute JB weld to "weld" the end on. Worked great, no problems with the cable so far. I think I spent less than 15 bucks.
