oil leak

Post by macibell111 »

just got my 37 running today let it get up to operation temp and noticed there is an oil leak coming fron the oil filter lid, snuged it up and it still leaks ,I probably could get another 1/2 turn. dont want to strip the bolt, wondering if the gasket is bad, it is new,oil too. or could there be a blockage somewhere that would cause oil to come out the oil filter lid.any ideas out there.

I thought my lid was leaking replaced the gasket to no avail. inspected the oil return line and flex line could find no defect. cleaned the oil filter holder and wrapped a piece of paper towel around the filter to try and pinpoint were on the lid it was leaking and much to my surprise the leak was not coming from the lid there was a hole about a inch down that sprayed oil up towards the cap. I removed the filter housing cleaned, sanded and for the life of me I could not see the microscopic hole or get thinners to leak out of the hole at room temp

Many of the available commercial replacement filters have a thin paper gasket which is not sufficient. You'll have to find one with a thick rubber gasket. Mine leaked too until I changed the gasket.

I have many spares, so I swapped it out. I did keep it, thinking it could be brazed .

I did not know this. I thought all the filters came with two rubber gaskets.

found the oil leak problem 2 things ,one there was a dent in the canister so I put 1 paper gasket and made 1 rubber gasket and the 2nd issue was where the bolt is positioned it was not centered with the canister so I straightened it and walla it work,s thanks for the help in this matter,on to the next venture
