Steering Box

Post by pwrwagonfire »

My steering box oil seal is leaking. I've been prowling around the internet, and in my Memphis Equipment/VPW Magazines scoping out how easy this is to fix. My truck has a little bit of slop in the steering, but nothing major, so for now I am only concerned with replacing the seal to fix the leak not doing a full re-build of the box.

Is stopping the leak out of the bottom on the box as easy as it looks like it will be? I know I need the oil seal, but is the "shim" that the exploded diagram shows behind the cover a gasket as well?

Thank you ahead of time for any responses! I know there are guys on here who have tackled this problem before.

It's not a difficult job but I'd offer that you need clean gasket surfaces and some type of Permatex sealer that is compatible/resistant to the gear lube or else it will ooze out, leaving you right back where you started. I can't recall what I used (several years ago), nor what Charles uses at M-Series on his gear boxes. You might send him a PM.

Thanks! Appreciate the information. I may PM him this week and see his take on it. In a perfect world I'd send him the box to re-build, however funds are tighter than tight, and my truck needs to be mobile as it lives in the street

I was able to order the gasket locally from a friend's parts store. I will try and post pictures of the process when I do it (this month) for other members reference!
