Steering Wheel

Gotta pull my steering wheel and having problems getting it off. Removed horn hardware and retaining nut. Tried a hammer behind hub to no avail. Haven't any pullers that will work. Any ideas.

Gotta get a puller somewhere Bill-you'll risk costly damage w/o one. I'd also lend you mine, but Utah is even farther from you than NC!

Thanks Gary. Yes, Utah is a bit far. But you're right. Already damaged steering wheel. Guess I'll be looking for a new one !

Well if the wheel is already fubar then get a BFH and have at it. Some penetrating oil and the BFH will remove it, but you will have to get a new steering wheel.

I need to pull two steering wheels. Can I build or buy a puller, or pay two-way shipping to borrow one?
I'm in Collierville, TN just east of Memphis.

Hi Guys,

Here's what the correct puller looks like........but I don't have one either. Advance Auto and Autozone lend tools, usually for free or a small deposit, so I'd check with them to see if they have something similar.

Think I have a solution. Do a search under military steering wheel puller. There is a pix of a nice home made set up. Basically two hunks of wood, bolted together. then drill a hole at the seam the same size as the column. Unbolt and clamp back together around column. Then take a standard gear puller plate and use 2 long bolts thru the plate and down thru the wood blocks. Use something to protect the steering shaft and tighten the puller bolt. Probably try it tomorrow.

Mine is different than Bob's, having the large and small backing rings but still works on the M37. If you will PM me your contact details I'll be happy to loan you mine unless you'd rather make a purchase-let me know either way.

Thanks Gary, but I think I'll try a homemade one. I know, I'm stubborn. Hope the steering wheel isn't. Might be in the market for a steering wheel in good shape.
