Wiring Identification Tags

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

Where do you get the little aluminum tags that go on the wires of the wiring harnesses that indicate the wire number? Does John at Midwest sell them....or anybody else? Also, how do you install them on the wire? I assume the tags are flat so you can stamp the wire number into them before they get wrapped around the wire......but is there a tool that wraps the tag around the wire? All the tags I've seen on harnesses look to have been installed uniformly.....which is why I suspect there's a tool.

thanks,
bob

Well, John would probably know who has them if he doesn't. You might try calling the places that make repro harnesses too.

If you are just looking for some extra numbers, I might be able to take them off some old harnesses I've kept for spare parts, if you want them.

Thanks 52, I appreciate the help.......but I'm leaning toward making my own new harnesses for my trucks.......so I'll need all the tags. Although I did have an interesting conversation with the wiring harness guys from Maine at Red Ball this weekend. They sure make it simple....just send them a bag of money and they send you nice shiny new harnesses.

On another note........it seems the early harnesses didn't use the aluminum tags on each wire. The NOS harnesses I have that were made in the early 50's use a paper tag covered with a type of celophane....which is junk after all these years. But I guess someone doing a 100 point restoration would need to use the paper tags and not the aluminum ones. I wonder when they switched to the aluminum tags?

Thanks again,
bob

Saturn surplus used to have them and probably still does Bob. The paper harness is a replacement, possibly for a country that was given M37s as part of the USA military assistance program. Paper tagged wires were not used on US owned trucks, later ones had plastic ID tags instead of aluminum but never paper in our military service.
To install, simply wrap the tag around the wire and bend the ears around the tag, no tool needed.

Hi Carter,

I just called Saturn Surplus and they're out of those aluminum tags. So I'm a day late, so to speak. I'll check with John at Midwest, but if anyone else knows of a source please let me know.

thanks,
bob
