Clutch issues, where to start?

Post by Caldwelljj0 »

So I drove my truck about two weeks ago and it worked fine. A week later I started it in the barn and all appeared fine, though I did not drive it on the road. This week I get in to go for a ride. It starts right up, but when I go to shift I to gear it grinds like crazy. Can't get it in to any gear with engine running. It appears the clutch is not engaging. I crawled underneath and the clutch pedal linkages appear fine. What should I do next to trouble shoot? Any ideas on where to begin before I have to pull the tranny? Can a clutch go out just sitting?

Most likely the disc is stuck to the flywheel due to surface rusting. If you can put it in gear, start the engine and get it out of the building; then drive it around in a safe area where nothing is in your way with the clutch pedal depressed all the way to the floor. Try holding pressure by applying brakes so it pulls harder. Most often in a few minutes it will pop loose and operate as normal. Driving up hill getting the truck under as much of a load as possible with pedal depressed all the while will apply more stress against the disc and likely free it up sooner for you. There are other ways to cure it, but try this first. If this fails to free it; call me, I'll give you some other options. Good luck.

Once again Charles, your advice proves invaluable. I did what you said and sure enough, the clutch started working again. Thanks.

Great, glad it worked out for you.

By the way, this is your truck begging to be driven more frequently.
