Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi Guys,
I'm looking to see what an M painted in OD 2430 semi-gloss looks like. That's supposedly the correct paint shade/code for M's made between 1950 and 1956....per TM Ordnance Products website. I bought a can of OD 2430 spray paint from them and like the shade....but I'd like to see a whole truck painted that color if possible. If yours is that color can you post a pic or direct me to your gallery?
Oh.....not looking to open up a can of worms here about which color is correct for what year and who's OD is the closest match.....just looking for a living breathing example of an OD 2430 painted truck. Thanks in advance.
regards,
bob

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi Sal,
Thanks for the link. I've been reading all the "discussions" on OD paint everywhere I can find them. At this point I just want to SEE what 2430 looks like on a whole vehicle. I'm sure someone has painted one this color....I just need to find it (or them). I've bought the spray can of 2430 from TM Ordnance and it exactly matches almost all of the NOS parts I've collected for my M37 that were dated in the early 50's. So I'm sold on the color being correct......just want to see it applied to a whole vehicle.
thanks,
bob

Bob have you tried matching AJP and Gillespie 23070 with your 2430 paint...

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi Sal,
Ok.....I'll bear my soul here.....but I don't want to provoke any bad vibes amongst those who've used the paints you mentioned.....I sense most are very happy with the paint they've chosen. My intent is to paint my M only once. I'm not too concerned about the price of the paint, as even the most expensive paint I use will be cheaper than having to strip and paint the truck all over again down the road (when I'll be older and a lot less enthusiastic about such a project). So my current plan is to buy the best automotive paint I can find, specifically a 2-part Catalyzed Urethane and Catalyst. Problem with that is I need semi-flat paint, which most automotive paint is not, and adding flatening agent tends to diminish the protective properties of the catalyzed urethane. So sort of a catch-22 if you will. But I think I can get around that.
The normal MV paint vendors like the ones you mentioned don't offer 2430 OD (or similar shade) in a catalyzed urethane. TM9 offerers it as a synthetic enamal.....but that's not good enough for me (and I don't mean to sound like a brat, but synthetic enamel is just not the best paint available). Their website is kind of funny in that they discuss the advantages of their catalyzed urethane and explained the effort it took to find the correct shade of 2430.......but they don't offer it in catalyzed urethane. Strange, but it is what it is I guess.
I've picked up spray cans of some of the other MV vendors paints at shows and meets and tried them on some test parts that I then subjected to what I consider normal wear and tear for a vehicle I plan to drive. I'm talking about walking on the parts with my shoes on, dragging them against tree branches, throwing rocks and stones at them.....and none held up to my satisfaction. Nor should they have considering the types of paints they were. I'm not saying they're not good paints for their intended purposes.......just not for my intended purpose. Again, not bashing anybody's product....I just want THE best paint available at the present time when I paint my truck.
So I plan on using TM9's 2430 as the paint sample I want the automotive paint guys to match. Not saying the other MV guy's paints aren't a close match, I just appreciate the effort TM9 put into finding the correct shade and producing it. Unfortunately they won't make it in the 2-part paint I want, or I'd buy it from them. So I'm set on color if I like what I see when I actually see a truck painted in it, although truth be told it's going to have to look pretty bad for me not to paint it in the correct 2430 shade, as I want to restore it correctly.......but not set on the paint manufacturer. Seems each major paint supplier has tiers or levels of paint "systems", and it's a bit complicated figuring out which system is best, as they make trade-offs in ease of application, durability, and ultimate gloss. So I need to research that a bit more for sure.
I'd love to discuss this more with you folks, so send your comments my way.....I'm always open to the wisdom of this forum. I just don't want to get folks riled up to where they feel they have to defend the paint choices they made. To each his own for sure, and I'm looking at this as a learning experience, not a criticism session. That said, let me know what you think.

bob

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
I'm actually looking to re-paint mine in the Korean shade versus 24087 since 24087 turned out to be more brownish than I like. Going to see if I can score some at Portland next month-pretty sure it's Gillespie 23050 OD.

Bob. Going by the Title of the Topic I thought you were talking about a color comparison and not a brand of paint.

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi Sal,
Yeah, I got carried away!
I'll figure out the brand of paint once I decide on the color. If I can't find a truck painted in 2430 I'll just buy a few spray cans from TM9 and paint a fender and door I have laying around and see what it looks like. Like Cal alluded to I'm hoping the Korean shade (2430) is not too brownish like the Viet Nam era OD.

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Bob, My M37 is painted is Gillespie's semi-gloss od. Which I believe is the color you are referring to. You can see a picture of it in the registry.

This picture was taken shortly after it was painted. If you want to see some more pics let me know and I will get some current ones.
Steve
PS. Are you from Michigan or do you just like the road sign?

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi Steve,
Is that where the sign is from? I'm from NJ originally, now living in MD, but I kept seeing that sign for sale on Ebay and figured what the heck. Seems the guy sold a bunch of them, so I assumed they were all removed and replaced with new signs. I had a hunch the "M" might be for Michigan.......not sure why.
Thanks for the link.....your truck looks fantastic!

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
That is a nice color. Truck looks great too. A little darker than WWII green but not as dark and brownish as 24087. Is that the corect Korea early 50's color?
M37s are HMMWV in my world!

Re: Anybody's M Painted OD 2430 ??
Hi K8,
The "correct" paint for the early 50's thru '57 military vehicles is 2430....which is where this thread started. I think it's a bit darker than Steve's semi-gloss OD. The easiest way to describe it is to tell you to pull off the shelf any NOS M37 part you have dated from '51 to '57 and that's what 2430 looks like. It's not as brown as the next OD color the military used from '58 thru the 60's (see Carter's M37 for what that looks like).

bob
