engine oil

Post by vinnytruck »

Hi Guys, doing a oil change: used 5qts. NAPA SAE 30 (in engine now) meets API service SN/SM,( changing the filter states add 6qts.) someone told me add the 6th qt. non detergent (ACCELL brand) SAE 30 (for API service SA) Is this the right thing to do? or what. worried...Please let me know, thanks vinnytruck

I'm sure Charles will link you to a lengthy disscussion on the topic of lubricants soonish.

Until then, I was running 10w30 in mine up until I finely figured out the drain plug and the part # for my filter. I'm doing 20w50 right now to help mitigate leaks here in the desert.

I would think though that mixing detergent (assuming the NAPA is) and non-detergent oil would just thin the detergent package of the 5 quarts. I have no idea how this would affect much.

Hopefully someone will come along that's more helpful than me. I'm learning as I go on mine

Isn't SA oil only good for things like roller-skates? Thats what my auto shop teacher told us about 35 years ago..

GOOD MORNING,
I am a firm believer in not, not mixing oil, you put 6 quarts of one brand and weight in. I am using a detergent, 10w40 in my M, non detergent does not make sense to me, mybe in your transmission, but not the engine.
Just my 2 cents

Vinny:
I don't know of any of my old car buddies that use non-detergent or straight weight oil anymore and haven't for
decades. (Maybe some of the air cooled airplane guys.) Per the advice above, due an in depth search on this site
on "oil." You'll be surprised with the overwhelming amount of info that you will find.
Listen to the experts like Charles and follow accordingly.

Good Morning Jerry, I tryed to look into "oil" on the forum but it stated It needs more letters to complete the findings. I will try again, but thanks to all for helping us figure this out. Maybe I should go with simple 30 weight and add the last qt.?? (not use the non det.) I will still be looking for your thoughts. As I go deeper into this truck repairing more angles seem to crop up... THANKS vinnytruck

That won't work either....I tried that yesterday. I searched on "Synthetic oil" and that brought up a few threads. The summation of all that I read was simple. Buy the best oil you can afford regardless if you drive the truck once a year or every day. Better oil equal better additives equals longer engine life. Obviously multi-grades are better, and chose the grade based on the ambient temperature you operate in. Wow...that sounds way to simple to be right.

Vinney:
w30bob and others are correct. Maybe your TM has pointed you towards straight weight and/or non-detergent. I did not look it up in the manual. Remember these manuals are printed 60 years ago and
obviously the technology in engine oils has taken quantum leaps. I concur; buy the best oil and Wix filters
that you can and change them both at reasonable intervals. i.e. if you're paying an NFL player 20 million
dollars a year, would you send him to McDonalds for a Big Mac? Of course not, you'd buy the over paid,
egotistical, cry-baby the best steak money could buy. Valuable property deserves the best maintenance.
