M37 Rear Blackout light set up????

Hi There,
A friend of mine is doing a nut and bolt restoration on a M37 which he wants to rebuild to Marine Corps spec with the extra fittings and fording kit etc.

He brought a new rear wiring harness and on the areas where the lights connect up there is a extra male connection and we can only assume its for a seperate blackout light???

What he wants to know is can someone confirm if it has a seperate rear black out light and if so where does it go and what brackets does he need.

Hey Maverick,
First, welcome to the Forum!
There are two schools of thought on the wiring harness's, NOS is thought to not have any, or much at all service life! Vintage Wiring of Maine does an excellent job of reproducing a very faithful repro, albeit it a little $$y. I my self am using a NOS rear harness, so far so good.
Regardless of the nature or provenance of the harness, it should be well marked, w/very small aluminum marker tags, each tag has a mate & or destination on you buddy's vehicle.
Vintage Wiring of Maine awards each buyer with a users installation guide, NOS is sort of like taking off you pants and sliding on the ice, just a figure of speech. However a manual will greatly facilitate the installation of said harness. So what have you and your bud got yourself into, or have I helped or confused you a little more? 8) (it might be for turn signals, a B-1 Model)

Thanks for the quick reply, The firing harrness is made up with the metal duglas fittings except for this one male plug which is a rubber packard plug and i know that this type of plug fits on to the seperate blackout light I have on my M54 6x6. We cant think what else it can be for, its on the correct side for a blackout light too?

any ideas?

What is the tag # on the wire in question? The fact that this 1 wire has a Packard connector has me wondering, this shouldn't be on a M37 harness. I have an idea of what it may be if indeed you do have a M37 harness. No need to get into detail until all the facts are in though. Is this harness a new reproduction or an NOS oldie?

Is this connector on each side in back or just one side? Of course the orignal setup on the m-37 was a standard tail/blackout light on the left an only a b/o light on the right side, although it was sized the same as the left one. Later however at least on b-1's I think, from the factory a tail/b/o light was added to the r. side also, which required adding back a stand alone b/o stop light unit w/ its own bracket. That is what that wire is for if its only on the right side.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I have just spoken to my friend and he confirms that his truck is a M37 but he has asked for a B1 wiring harness from Vintage Wiring of Maine so that he could have indicators on both sides rather than the original set-up of a standard tail/blackout light on the left and only a b/o light on the right side. So this confirms what gwalker was saying so thank you to him and the other for your help. So the next question is has anyone got the correct bracket and blackout light???

I have the black-out brake light assy, but not a correct bracket for the M37. The only bracket I have mounts the brake light below the tail light like a jeep trailer instead of to the right of it. Would work fine, however not politically correct. Will take $20 for the light only or $30 for the light & bracket. It would ship in a flat-rate USPS box.

Thanks for the tip off but its the single blackout light and bracket I'm looking for and not the Blackout/ stop/ tail light

if it is a single it must be for the front, right!, if so try vintage powerwagon, they have them.

We have a misunderstanding here. The single black-out brake light is used on the right rear of the M37. There are no black-out brake light provisions within stock light assemblies, only black-out markers. If the single lamp isn't in place, then there is no brake light when operating in the black-out mode. The newer composite lights have black-out brake lights included, thus we upgrade to them when possible.
