Air cleaner disassembly?

I'm packing up a bunch of parts to get sand blasted and some to get powder coated. (engine rebuild) And I'd like to run the air filter through the same process but it looks a little difficult to take apart. Does anyone know how to pull these apart? I only had about 2 minutes to look at it and it wasn't obvious.

Hi Jim,

I don't think they come apart. I went thru the same head scratching a few weeks ago when I glass beaded my air cleaner. I taped the internals so as not to allow sand into the filter media, but it got in there anyway. I ended up soaking it (in parts cleaner) and then draining it, many times to make sure the media was sand free. I think it's assembled and then spot welded together.......but could be wrong. If you find a way please let me know.

The air filter I have is stapled together and would not be worth taking apart. I would drop the whole thing in solvent and that will take care of paint stripping and cleaning in one step. I don't care how well you tape the filter up, the blasting media will find its way in.

You guys are right. I really don't want to sand blast this thing. I just wanted to get the rattle can green off of it then get it powder coated along with everything else. Its gonna look odd with all its neighbors cleaned up and fresh lookin'.

Well, I looked at it today and figured it looked "good enough" and put it back in the box. It'll clean up fine with a solvent rag.

But then this got me thinking. How do these things work anyway? I was born too late to have much exposure to them. I see the oil in the bottom, what looks kinda' like steel wool in the middle to upper section. How does it not just clog up with wet oily dust instantly?

The incoming air percolates through the oil bath so most of the contaminates drop in the oil bath, the oil that splashes up gets trapped in the media and drips back into the base of the filter.
