How hard is it to mate that particular tranny to the L230? I ask, because it might be cheaper for me to start on an engine back drivetrain swap now, since my np200 got fragged. Though I do need to see which gears are stripped in it.

Re: SM465
Or how hard the rebuild of the NP200 is?
Re: SM465
Rebuilding the t case is easy. get your girlfriend to do it

my woman tor down cleaned and inspected 5 t cases then we assembled the best components trying not to mix too many gears.

RMS,
Great picture but it looks like she is making a fist with her right hand while you are taking the picture.

Re: SM465
Awesome! Any special tools I need. I have some pretty basic stuff right now, no gear pullers or anything like that,
Re: SM465
your right on the money Bert, she hates having her pic taken. i have a better pic i wanted to post but she wouldn't let me because she is wearing pink gloves in the pic.T. Highway wrote:RMS,

the manual says special tools are needed. i got the job done with only two special tools, a torque wrench and a flange wrench. i did not use any dowels during assembly. I used grease to keep the needle rollers in place
what happened ? if your T case has damage i would look for a couple of spares. most of the t cases we striped had severe corrosion on one half of each gear.jimmy_stikx wrote:my np200 got fragged

I tried to use the ebrake as an emergency brake while rolling. I don't know why that didn't register as bad. >.>
A flange wrench you say. I might to pick one up.

Re: SM465
understandable that it didn't register as bad. i have used my ebrake many times intentionally and by accidentjimmy_stikx wrote: I don't know why that didn't register as bad

i bet a thrust washer broke and got jammed between the drive gear and the two speed clutch gear causing partial engagement. three of the tcases we striped had thrust washers and/or shims packed in the drive gear stopping the clutch gear from fully engaging.
the hardest part of rebuilding the tcase was undoing the drive shaft bolts. high quality wenches are required. i have a couple combo close ended hazet wrenches from the 70s that work, even on the 11/16th drive shaft nuts. most pre 1960s snap-on's will also work.
cant wait to see some pic's of the carnage in side your tcase

Re: SM465
I had to do that on a hill when the booster failed on the brakes, I eased the brake on, held it dragging heavily but not full on whilst pushing what was left of the brakes operating with the crook of my right arm on the wheel steering (My truck IS right had drive, I am not a contortionist), Fortunately for me the car at the bottom of the hill moved off before I ended up there. I then put the truck down the next hill with the hazard lights on and not getting out of third gear all the way home (about 2 miles) but this was an actual emergency and I guess I was lucky not to blow the snot out of it.....jimmy_stikx wrote:I tried to use the ebrake as an emergency brake while rolling. I went to ease in and heard loud bangs and clanks and smoke. It also snapped the shackle connecting the rear driveshaft to the t-case.

Re: SM465
So it wasn't broken, nor has it had maintenance done to the tcase before I pulled it. So new gaskets and oil it is and putting it back in.
