Fender mounted heater parts

I'm getting ready to mount the hot water heater on the left fender. Heater assembly # 8380650
I have most of the parts including the radiator cover.
I don't have any pieces of duct. TB 9-2855-45, page 4, shows three pieces of flexible duct.
1-38", 1-11" and 1-20" Looks like I need over 6' of duct, 4" i.d.
As I remember, the duct is cloth-like material covering a spiral of wire.

Is there a source for this flexible duct that at least "looks" like the original?
I don't want to use aluminum dryer duct if I can avoid it.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I think you have a couple of options. I just did a real quick Google search on "Cloth Covered Flexible Duct" and found this;

McMaster-Carr also has a variety of fabric hose.....search on "duct hose" and then narrow the search by selecting "fabric" under the material section on the on the left side of the page.

I ordered the cloth covered hose from John today. Forgot to get a 180 degree thermostadt. Duh!
Charles and Rick Hoffman have already recommended a 180 thermostadt with or without a fender
mounted hot water heater. What was I thinking?????
The training bulletin measurements for drilling the holes in the left fender make the heater
mount look cock-eyed. Oh well, that's what the TB says and that's what it will be.

The last M37 that I had also had a fender mounted hot water heater. Man.... did that thing put out
the BTU's. Had to lower the windows at times to keep the "jewels" from being fryed.
You guys in Yankee-land would sure appreciate one of these fender mounted hot water heaters
in the winter time.

Hi Jarhead,
I agree the heaters do throw out good heat. I marked the hole locations on my fender, then placed the unit on them and you are correct, it looked cockeyed. I adjusted it until the top of the cover aligned with the bottom of the hood and re-marked the holes and drilled them there. Looks a lot better than the spec location. I think the heaters were sourced from several vendors, perhaps the first one had a different footprint and that is what the instruction manual was going by. Seems I remember there being knockouts in the fender for mounting the heater, but I ignored them.

Yep, a lot of the same during my installation. Marked the holes using the measurements in TB 9-2855-45.
Part numbers in the TB matched part numbers on all parts in the kit. Kit is NOS.
Looked goofy. Knockout holes did not match. Rotated the heater towards rear before drilling to get
the heater aligned with the hood surface. In that position, the heater cover was starting to bind with
the fender weatherstripping. So I figured, what the hey, if that's what Uncle Sam or Dodge wanted
then I'll move the heater back on the marks from the TB. Now that it's bolted in I still think it looks goofy.
Will be looking at other fender mounts at mil. vehicle shows in the future. If I did it wrong I'll call
it a "field" mod.

The hose I got from John at MWM is black in color.
It's really some stout stuff. Should last a hundred years.

All of my M37s and M43s had the heater hole locations marked on the fender as well as the small vertical side pieces along the hood. Do those hole locations make the heater sit funny too??

I can't speak for ALL the knock-outs on M37 fenders. The knock-out holes in my fender did not match the mounting
brackets for my heater kit nor did the measurements match from those shown in the manual
I assume different kits over the years have different brackets to fit a variety of
M series trucks.
While still a little cock-eyed, I mounted the heater as near level as I could and still not interfere with the
fender welting. It's the hood box that has the clearance issue with the welting.
