m42?
I was looking at my dash plates. Has one that was stamped truck command 3/4 ton 4x4 m 42 has a ord stock # and also said This plate is a component of kit command .But it also has another plate with ord stock # and all the rest of the information. I finally started looking through my parts that came withe the truck found a different alternator, fan pulley, a blinker switch I think and a fan you mount on the dash or somewhere. How many of these trucks were there .What was differnt?
Re: m42?
If I remember correctly (and subject to correction), the M42 command truck kit had the following items in it:
Legs for the tailgate to hold it up without chains.
A light for inside the bed.
A canvas cover for the bed with four windows on each side.
A pullout map table for under the glove box.
A small corded light that plugged into a special socket on the dash.
A data plate to signify it was converted into a command truck.
A radio conversion for the G741 trucks is where the big 100-Amp alternator, rectifier, regulator, and pulley system comes from. It was not part of the M42 conversion, but some of them had it added as well.

Re: m42?
The Command Truck kit consisted of the following parts:
1) Command side curtains. These are separate pieces of canvas with non reflective, replaceable plastic windows on each side of the bed which are installed underneath the canvas cover for the bed. A picture of the truck with these installed is in the manual.
2) A special end curtain (similar to a tent entry) with a center zipper. It is much longer than a standard rear end curtain. There supposedly was a different front curtain also, but the documentation for this is not without controversy. The rear end curtain is also shown in the manual.
3) A special Map Light. There is a reel mounted one for the rear (rare and you hit your head on it all the time) and a more common, long cord type which can be plugged into the receptacle on the right side of the dash by the glove box.
4) A map table that hooks to the side rails in the bed of the truck with two adjustable legs. This table will fit on either side of the truck. It can also be used with the tailgate This is shown in the manual.
5) A plate for the dash of the truck identifying the truck as an M-42 Command Truck when this kit is installed.
The slide out map table under the dash was a feature of the WW II Command Cars (WC 6, WC 7, WC 56 & WC 57). It was not carried over to the M-42 series.
The 100 amp alternating current charging system was a MWO for dedicated radio trucks to meet the power demands of the newer radio systems contained in the S-89 and S-144 radio shelters that were mounted in the bed. These shelters were specifically designed for the M-37.
The drivers side mounted spare was a separate MWO that was not part of any other kit. It was a standard production modification however to the B1 series of trucks. So, all B1's had side mounted spares, but not all trucks with side mounted spares were B1's.
The fact that all, or parts of the various MWO's and the Command Truck Kit were installed on various trucks at the same time has created some confusion regarding what was or was not in the M-42 Command Truck Kit.
Hope this helps.

Re: m42?
Thank you . I am thinking about trading my 53 m37 for a 53 power wagon, but my m37 is in good shape, new moter, no rust on the frame still has paint on 75% of the underside. Garaged most of its life. The power wagon has surface rust on all of the underside and missing about $1500 in parts. The body is a 3.5 star out of 5. It has about 16000 miles on it, and It will run with a little work. What do you guys think?
Thanks George
Thanks George

Re: m42?
I'd say keep the M-37, but I'm biased.
The M-37 has more accessories to collect, has better manuals, is easier and cheaper to work on, and is, in my opinion, the ultimate expression of 4WD utility.
Besides, it is the only convertible pickup truck I know of.
And... it goes through eight feet of water.

Re: m42?
George.....really?
You're asking a bunch of M37 nuts on an M37 website which you should keep.....the nice M37 or the so-so PW?
As for what M-52 has to say.....well, the PW is probably worth more when fully restored....but it's gonna cost a bunch to get it there. I believe Shelby made a Dodge Dakota convertible back in the 80's....and the PW will also go thru 8 feet of water......when it's being pulled my an M37.
KEEP THE M37! (Just funnin' with ya......you do what you think is best!!!)
regards,
bob

Re: m42?
I can't afford a early PW, (and I don't have the room even if I could) but I can afford a M-37 / M-42. The M-series will nickle and dime you all the time but the older PW's are always after $5's & $10's.
