Which Way Does Hood Star Point???

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

I've seen trucks with the top point of the star facing the windshield....and facing the radiator. Is there a "right" way to put that star on the hood?

thanks,
bob

Bob,
Here is mine, I postioned it according to the directions from Rick Larsen. It also is how I saw it in pictures of some M37's in Vietnam. Is ther a rule? Dunno.. :

Somewhere, I recall that in WW2 the star pointed to the rear. After that, they changed it to point toward the front. I know that for Nam, it pointed front. I recall that the change took place somewhere around Korea, +/- 5 years but don't know for sure when. I recall a thread about it either here or at SS.

Star points forward and is located in FRONT of the windshield when it is in the down position.

No points off!!!!!!!!
Remember, "Joe" private was told to "go out and paint the stars on the trucks", no indication of where they went.
Line the trucks up in a row and the stars will be all over the place! Same with the rest of the markings.

Darn, just this evening a goon squad showed up to confinscate all of my car show awards because the hood star may be incorrect... Man , I feel like Lance Armsrong :P

Although I am still confused...mine does point forward? Also is the same as some Vietnam Era M43's I have a picture of and several here in our gallery. No repaint for me ... :)

Well, here we go again, mine is pointed to the rear. Maybe I can take the truck back for a refund, with all the extra work I've done, the PO will have to reimberse me a few grand. Other option, I will have to drive backward everwhere or tell everybody it's an optical illusion to confuse the enemy or a new camo so that you can't tell it's a US truck. LOL. This is another excuse to repaint the hood since the PO never removed the dents or filled the rust pitting before painting. At this rate, if I live long enough I'll have as much in mine as a M4 Sherman, just a dollar at a time.

The other option is to buy one of those magentic signs of a star and simply reverse it everytime someone posts this question! I put mine on backwards too. I didn't realize there was a "right way" and I figured you'd want it too look right to those approaching from the front of the vehicle. Shows what I know.

It's not the orientation of the star but the position. Looks like the windshield would cover part of it if folded down. LOL! You could take your hard top off and give it to me and then fold the windshield down to prove me wrong...

ImageOn my 51 M37 the star points to the front. I can't recall If the star orientation did a flip in a particular year or what.Image

Wow, I have never seen a hood star that far forward..interesting.

Joe, even if I did decide to part with my hardtop, when would I ever find time to take that hour drive north to your place and deliver it?

Making sure the star can be seen with the windshield down DOES make sense. I just never thought of that. Thanks Ed for the pics!! Now I have to go find where I put that can of Rustoleum Camo Green and the star stencil I made out of poster board.......
