So before I saturate the seals with oil I decided to try a dry fit. Jammed in as tight as they will go they stick out the end of the retainer about am inch. I can't imagine that soaking them in oil will make them shorter. The new felts are from John at Midwest so I assume they are the correct length. Has anyone had the same experience? Do you just slice off the extra? Manual doesn't say anything about that. I know the flat oil seal joint covers the gap at the top. Any observations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Felt flange oil seal installation
I just replaced those last weekend on my M. I too received mine from John at MWM. I encountered a similar issue, but as I installed them in the slot of the retainer ring, beginning from one end, working around the circumference, I compressed them to shorten them. They fit just fine.
