That is for the defroster distribution box. Connection comes in from the left front fender (fender mounted heater) to the heater box/diverter and up from there behind the dash, makes the turn thru the dash at that point.

I've seen some truck with a speaker mounted there. Or at least a circular wire mesh cover that I assumed was a speaker!

I'd guess they put a speaker in there to fill the hole.

The large hole in the dash is, as mentioned, for the deforster distribution box.
This subject has been on g741 and has pictures. Try a search and maybe you
can find the pic's. Might clarify what we're talking about.
