Starter issue.....

Have a perplexing problem with my starter. It happened again last night. When I depress the starter pedal sometimes I get nothing, as if there is no juice going ot the starter. When this happens I wait a bit then manually pull on the starter yoke from under the hood until I get the starter to kick a little. I can then hop back i nthe truck and it'll start right up. This doesn't happen often, and when it does I am confident(from knowing the old dog) that I will be able to get it going. It doesn't happen often but it is annoying. I'd like to be able to solve the problem, so I don't hop in while out someplace and have this happen and not be able to start the truck.

BTW - Its not the switch because I replaced it and the old one did the same thing. To me its as if something at some point in time just doesn't mate up correctly and not connection is made for the juice to flow.

Sounds as if the lever on the starter is out of adjustment as far as pushing on the switch rod. If you'll notice the short bolt that pushes the switch rod provides a minor bit of adjustment, my guess is you are running out of pedal travel before the rod is pushed far enough to make the switch disc contact well. Lengthening the adjustment so the rod pushes farther when you press on the pedal will most likely take care of the problem. Be sure you don't over do it or it will cause the starter motor to spin before the drive meshes the flywheel ring, this of course will cause gear clashing.

If this adjustment doesn't cure the problem, most likely the trouble is within the starter motor & will become a larger issue as time goes on.

I make this assumption since you have already replaced the switch. There is of course the outside chance the new switch has a problem.
