Rebuilt my 24 volt Distributor

Post by T. Highway »

I rebuilt my 24 volt distributor with new bushings, top shaft seal, coil, points, cond, rotor and cap yesterday. The original bushings had about .010" wobble on the top end and I don't think anyone had soaked the oiler wick for the last 20 years. I even oiled the wick under the rotor.

What size are the bushings? Where did you find them?

Specs:
Bronze Bushings can be found at your local bearing supply house.
O.D. .625"
I.D. .500"
Length 1" for both

The top bushing will need an oil wick slot in it.

If there is enough interest I will set the mill up and make a batch of these for a reasonable price.

Send a PM if this is of interest to you. I will figure out a price the first week of January.

mcmaster-carr is a great source for these, the wick slot can be cut quicker with a file than you can set up the mill, unless you were doing a quantity batch. You will also need an appropriately sized bushing driver and a .501" reamer to size them after they are installed to make the set up the best it can be.

Are those the cast 660 bronze or sintered (oilite) bushings that are used in the distributor?

Either can be used, though in this application oilite is not a necessity since it is to be oiled manually on top and from the engine on the bottom. We always use the tougher, longer lasting 660.

There was not enough interest in these so I will not be making any.
