Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
I have a lead on a hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled complete engine with out the intercooler so not 100% complete. It is on the coast of New Jersey and he will take $1000 for complete pan to tranny. unknown mileage and needs a turbo rebuild. He has not heard it run but was "assured " it did. not sure if somebody here wanted one for a swap. It has the chevy sm465 behind it. It is on the 4bt swap website and epay from what I saw. To find it just google 3.7 hercules diesel and it will pop up. I was interested but too many irons in the fire right now.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
If anyone is interested in the engine; we have developed a 5-speed overdrive trans set up for the Hercules, .69 5th gear over.

Do you have a price installed and uninstalled? Also does it require shortening the drive line?

It was last year around Thanksgiving when we set up the last one we've done, I'll have to go back and look at the cost, memory not what it once was. I'll make a note to check this over this weekend.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
supposedly the guy who has it is going to see if it runs this weekend. He bought it and was told "it runs great" but he has never heard it and he said the turbo has ALOT of play so a rebuild is needed on the turbo. It would be cool to see a 3053 behind it that would make up for the 5.83 gearing !!

We've got a turbocharger in stock for it also.xm708 wrote:supposedly the guy who has it is going to see if it runs this weekend. By the way, the DT3.7 is not an intercooled engine, instead it requires a frontal charge air cooler (after cooler) that is mounted ahead of the radiator with separate plumbing to and from that unit. It is rated at 125 HP. The non after cooled model is rated at 108 HP. Both were used in the M37 repower kits. You would need to check the engine data plate located on the side of the block beneath and behind the turbo. If it states that rated HP is 108, then the cooler is not required at all. If it is indeed a 125, all that is required for it to run without the cooler is a simple recalibration of the injector pump; and honestly , you won't ever know the difference from behind the wheel; neither engine model was a real power house.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
It has an aftercooler sorry Charles. Some say potato some say potattto ? It is definately the 125 horse engine and still has the aftercooler piping on it. I am hoping to get my 4bt up and running eventually so I was not in a hurry to jump on it.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
I think you misunderstood my intent. I'm not arguing the point, your original post said it was intercooled, Hercules 125's were not. Intercooled and aftercooled are 2 totally different set ups, although they accomplish the same purpose in the end. Intercooled engines generally use a jacket water or similar type cooler instead of the frontal charge air cooler that was on the Hercules. The water type uses the engine coolant to cool the charge air. These types of coolers are integral on the engine and don't require the actual aftercooler core up front, additional plumbing, etc. I'm aware the 125 version of the Hercules had to have the charge air cooler in order to function in that HP mode. We were once the Southeastern US dealer for the Hercules repower project in the early 90's, so I'm very familiar with the set up of both the 108 and 125 types.
By the way, you have made the better choice in chosing to repower with a Cummins rather than the Hercules. Many reasons it's better to use Cummins; but a chief reason is that the original Hercules Co has been gone for many years now. Some parts are already impossible to find. I can't see that issue improving at all.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
I found this definiton online last night and thought it was worth posting.
"An aftercooler is a heat exchanger placed between the compressor and the engine’s inlet. Vortech uses the term "aftercooler" as we feel it is more accurate; it is "after" the compressor. "Intercooler" means a heat exchanger placed between two compressors in a multi-stage system, but has been used as a synonym for an aftercooler ever since it was incorrectly stuck on the backend of a Volvo in about 1981. Aftercoolers and intercoolers are both also called charge coolers."
I have a ram with a 5.9 cummins and they called it intercooled but it always brought up the question well if I have an intercooler what is the difference between this and the aftercooler on a 4bta ? The only difference is one is air to air and one is air to water. Both units serve the same function. I think the term intercooler is wrong according to this definition.

Re: Hercules 3.7 turbo intercooled
I only brought this out in my first post for the benefit of someone who may have been interested in the purchase of the Hercules engine; and may not have known all the requirements for installing it. If correct terms aren't used for parts needed, it causes confusion when a potential buyer is searching for components. If the parts supplier thought a buyer was looking to purchase an actual intercooler set up for this engine; that could cause all kinds of chaos.
