transfer case problems
I decided to put new seals in my transfer case, tore it down and found pitted bearings. I'm told that the cost for bearings and trying to install the needle bearings is not something just anyone can do. My delema is, I have restored cars, rebuilt car, snowmobile, etc. engines, differentials, transmissions, wrenched on a lot of different equipment and the needle bearing issue doesn't look all that difficult, just time consuming and delicate work. Some have said it's better to find another transfer case but, in doing that, how do you know you aren't buying the same problem. I assume a rebuilt would be high dollars and I'm trying to keep some semblence of a budget. Looks like I will need the shaft and gear plus the bearing set which is going to set me back $500.

Re: transfer case problems
I have rebuilt a couple of these TCs and its fussy work but not rocket science. The TM has a great step by step and there is a special tool that a machinist friend of mine made for removing a shaft with shims and to facillitate reinstallation of same. I would loan you the tool if you decide to do it yourself. Dave Cirillo sells all of the bearings, seals, shims etc that you need at very fair prices. He knows these cases inside and out. His website is www.jobrated.com
Good luck,

Re: transfer case problems
Thanks for the info. I have a machine shop in my basement, lathe, mill etc. I can pretty much mill or turn anything I need and I have a Journeyman Tool & Diemaker friend who helps with the stuff I haven't mastered. Would you happen to have a picture or dimensions of the tool, I can make one up. I will call on the bearings tomorrow and get them on the way.
Thanks again, the info is invaluable.

Re: transfer case problems
I will get you the dimensions, it is a shaft with a threaded hole in one end, it screws onto a shaft before you drive it out, and it stays in the case until you drive the shaft back in. The shim pack transfers onto the tool, and then back onto the shaft when the shaft is reinstalled.
I will measure it up in the next day or so.
