So just to be sure that I understand this, if I get my hands on a US PTO and change out the idler gear with the other version from VPW (does anyone know what the part number is?) then the pto will work on my Acme Canadian trans? Is there truth to clearance issue around the oil pan on the Canadian 251 that I mentioned above.
Thanks for all your help!
Paul.

A US pto with the idler gear change will do what you need.dotgain wrote:So just to be sure that I understand this, if I get my hands on a US PTO and change out the idler gear with the other version from VPW (does anyone know what the part number is?) then the pto will work on my Acme Canadian trans? I had a look at my motor and really can not see how there would be an issue with the oil pan.
Also pulled the pto plate off my trans and can confirm the angle of the teeth are like the illustrations posted above.
This should make my pto search easier.
Thank you for all your help!

Re: Canadian M37 PTO
Well I found a nos pto and the idler gear from VPW, installed about a year ago on the trans checking for proper backlash thought all was good.
Now I have the motor in and was firing up for the first time (fired right up, was great to hear after so much work) however I am getting a gear noise from the mesh between the idler gear and third speed gear.
I Pulled the top of the trans off to look and tried reducing/increasing gaskets, the result was the same amount of gear noise.
pto and trans turn smooth when not assembled.
It is not a real heavy noise but just doesn't seem right?
Also there is not a full mess between the idler and third speed gear, idler gear is about .125'' out of mess with third speed gear, is this normal?
I have a pic but getting “board attachment quota has been reached” error.
Any help would be great.

Re: Canadian M37 PTO
The proper backlash measurement is .008" to 012" when using new parts. What this means is a new gear mating with a new gear. If I'm understanding correctly, you are using a new pto, so the assumption would be it has a new gear installed. If you are mating this new component with a 3rd gear that already has an established tooth wear pattern; you will most likely never get it to run completely quiet. You stated backlash measured .125" I belive; that of course is a too loose set up, and will most certainly be noisy. Backlash setting should not exceed .025" - .030" at the most. Sometimes the little extra will help to quiet things down when gearing has wear established, but don't count on great strides. After it runs a while with a good backlash setting, it will quiet down to some degree; but like I said, never will run as quiet as it would if all gears were new at initial set up.

Re: Canadian M37 PTO
Thanks for the reply, that makes good sense.
Regarding the .125'' was the amount that the idler gear is out of mesh with the third speed gear, the two gears do not line up together, the idler gear hangs .125'' off the edge, is that typical?
I set the backlash between .003 to .008 but will set closer to .012 in hopes that noise may reduce?
I have set it tighter and looser with no noticeable change in noise, hopefully with time it will reduce.
I guess there is no way to condition a new idler gear to a used third speed gear?

Yes it is typical for the gears not to align perfectly. I'd set up in the .010" to .020" range and run it for a while. Whether the extra noise actually improves with some run time or the noise just grows on you, it will improve somewhat for the driver who gets accustom to it. Remember this trans never won a quietness award, so that is also attributing to the issue.

Thank you Charles, I feel better going forward… just wish I asked first before cracking the paint up on my trans:(
