I don't know what pic you're referring to, but I doubt that he was using a shaving brush. It was most likely a "made-for-the-purpose" stencil brush. They looked a lot like a shaving brush, but were considerably stiffer. Not as stiff as a parts cleaning brush, but I'd still hate to shave with one.

(Incidentally, for you young whipper-snappers on the forum, I still use a Gillette double-edge razor with a brush and mug. I've tried electric razors and hate 'em. I've tried every brand of disposable razor on the market and hate 'em. Nothing can beat my old Gillette except maybe a straight razor. I'd use one now, but I never mastered the art of keeping one honed. :( )

Yeah Sal they are :) .

In my opinion, the decals do look like decals on the vehicles. Then again, when I was painting the stars on my M151A1, I did to many repeditive coats on one of the smaller stars and when I removed the masking, it (the star) looked like a decal  :? .

This is true but then again, what was actually done in service verses what the experts think is correct is usually two different things as well.

IF NOSTALGIA IS THE SOUGHT AFTER THING, KEEP IN MIND THAT STENCILS WHERE CUT IN WAYS THAT "INSIDE" PIECES OF TTHE LETTERING HAD TO BE RETAINED. IN OTHER WORDS, "O" AND "0" HAVE TWO SOLID LINES AT TOP AND BOTTOM THAT HOLD THE INSIDE SOLID PART. SAME WITH "A" "P" "B" "8" AND SO ON. SO IN REPRODUCING ERA MARKINGS DO NOT FORGET THIS DETAIL EXACT COMPUTER GENERATED MASK MIGHT NOT BE ALL THAT AUTHENTIC IF IT DOES NOT HAVE THOSE TABS. JUST MY TWO CENTS :D

Lifer, it was a pic in either Supply line or Army Motors heck had to be 10+ years ago and it looked like a shaving brush. Most stencil brushes I seen are cut flat across the face, but this one was rounded like a shaving one. Also it was stubby like a shaving brush and not a longer handle like a stencile brush. If I remember correctly the caption said soldier applies unit numbers with a shaving brush or something like that. On the bumber of a CCKW too... :) My point is that at least durning the war years markings got put on the best they could. In this example they were not putting them on in a climate controled heated garage, but in them mud of France with the tools at hand. That the markings aren't purfect and if someone wants to get a true historical look to their vehilce they need to put them on like a GI would have. That's all I was trying to say. Nothing wrong with vinyl letters they look good as does paint mask and if that is what someone wants to use on their truck I say more power to them. Go for it!

I USE A STRAIGHT ENGLISH SHEFIELD INHERITED FROM MY GRANDFATHER, A STRAIGHT GERMAN DOVO, AND SINCE HONING IS INDEED TOUGHT TO ACHIEVE, I HAVE ALSO A STRAIGHT DOVO WITH REPLACEBLE INEXPENSIVE BLADES. THEY ARE AWESOME. EASY TO CLEAN, AND SINCE I DO NOT SHAVE OFTEN, THEY REALLY CUT THROUGH THE LONG THINK BEARD EASY. NOTHING LIKE THE MULTIPLE EDGE RAZORS. THE ONE WITH THE REPLACABLE BLADES IS AWESOME TO CARRY INTO TRIPS, SINCE NO NEED FOR THE HONING LEATHER TO CARRY IT ALONG.I DON'T KNOW ABOUT BROWN COMBAT BOOTS, BUT STRAIGHT RAZORS RULE!! :D

Thanks Bob I'll give you a ring . As for over spray I really don't remember ever seeing any of the Markings on any of the trucks or trailers in my armory having anything other then clear crisp markings. But then I don't think any of them were done in the field...

That's an interesting and certainly fair question, and it was definitely on my mind when deciding what to purchase. I finally decided on decals simply because I thought I might like them best. They of course have perfect edges as is expected with decals. :)
