Sun engine analyzer

Hi everyone. I have found this old Sun engine analyzer and would like to get it going. I have not been able to find any info on it on the internet. So I am hoping some of you guys used one or can tell me where to get a manual so I can see what does what and how to use the other functions.

A few things I found - This model number has been used since at least 1977. Sun Electric has been bought out by Snap-on. There appear to be some guys on the Garage Journal forum who restore these units. They might be of more help.

Thats a cool piece of hardware, I've often wished I had one. I haven't the foggiest idea of how it works, but I'm sure it would help in the diagnosis part of other engine related problems... Or at least give visual proof that my eyes and ears are on the right track when tuning!

Thanks for the info Master Yota. I will click on over there and check it out. I feel like you , it would be great to see it working and it would work great on my 75 Bronco. I still have to meet emission tests in AZ and it would be great to know I am in the ball park before I head over.

How old does a vehicle have to be in AZ before it doesnt need to meet emmision regulations?

Hi Stu,
Here in Arizona, it is '66 and older. Only vehicles in Pima and Maricopa counties are required to take the emission test. For now the rest of the state is exempt. There has been a collector car law passed . I believe if you can prove to the state that your vehicle meets certian requirements like, not your primary car, and driven less than so many miles a year you can get an exemption. I am hoping to make that happen through my insurance co.. We shall see.

I'm still working on getting some info on the tester. I joined the Garage Journal forum and got some info there. I didn't know that Snap on had bought Sun. I am going to contact them maybe I can get a PDF of the original manual.

probably a pretty dang good bet to contact snap on. Their support of products is top notch usually.

I still use my Sun model TUT-1015 engine analyzer on my older vehicles . I learned how to use it back in the '80s. I still have all of the manuals plus tune-up charts for it. The oscilloscope is really handy for checking your primary and secondary ignition. At times I wish it had the exhaust analyzer with it so I could get more in depth on how the carbs are doing. I also have a Snap-On counselor ,which has almost the same features but in a much smaller package.

Skinnedknuckles how does the scope connect to the engine. What cable and what does the end look like? I'd like to play with that.

Rick, heres the connections:
Blue Lead- wire with the black boot and clamp goes to engine ground
wire with the red boot and clamp goes to negative side ( distributor ) of coil
chrome large clamp goes to the large coil wire

Red Lead- red clamp goes to number 1 plug wire a couple inches from the plug

Red Twin Flex Lead - wire with the red boot and clamp goes to positive on battery
wire with the black boot and clamp goes to neg. on battery

Black lead- wire with the green boot and clamp goes to alternator positive to battery terminal ( or I believe the batt. terminal on a voltage regulator or to the batt.
terminal on starter )
big green clamp goes to the neg. cable off the battery

silver metal shrouded probe goes in exhaust pipe and held in with the clip

black hose goes to engine manifold vacuum

You may also have a large flat plastic and brass plate with brass clips on the side thats for a GM HEI system -it just sits on top of the cap with the coil in it and clips on with 1
or 2 small leads that go to the tach terminal in the cap.
Sun did publish a few books on these testers, one is just on the oscilloscope patterns which is very good for diagnosing ignition problems

I will print out your connections and give it a try, I didn't know that I have 2 testers on one stand. The top is the TUT 915 R and the bottom is the EPA75 .
I found out via google that Snap On bought Sun in 1992. When I called them on the phone they sent me to a company called Actron. Actron must be a sub dvision of Snap On and they make the sun tachs and instruments. But they did not have any manuals for the old tester . They did say it was vintage 1977.
As far as the EPA unit I found a guy on the internet who owns a company in Phoenix that rebuilds these and other emission testers. He sent me a PDF manual . HE was very helpfull. His website is http://drsmogtest.com/#.

Well thanks for all the help . I have decided it's more work than I want to get into so I sold it on Craigs list for what I paid for it. The guy who bought likes it and wants to try to really put time into it to get it going.
