Tires
Hello List!
I swung by my perfered tire shop the other day to price out some new shoes for my '01 Dakota and while I was at it, I desided to inquire about some NDTs. They had three brands in the 9:00X16 size to offer me all with the NDT tread (didn't think to ask for another tread type).
STA.......$228.59
Titan.......$218.40
Denman*...... $191.00
*I know that Denman folded but apparently, the tire shop has a source
Anyone know or have an opinion as to how these different brands stack up to one another? While I think of it, does anyone have a source for the "NATO" tread pattern 9:00X16s-these were used a lot on LandRovers but I've also seen Ferrets & M37s sporting them as well.
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Tires
All of my deuce's that I have purchased from the government have had new Titans on them right from the base. They are wearing pretty good. I just picked up a set of STA's for my mighty mite (m422a1) and I have a set of those on my m37B1 that I am restoring right now . I have not driven these two yet to say how I personally like them ( I have heard others that I know say that they like them). The Denmans are kind of questionable as I have had numerous bad experiences with the Denman brand here at my truck shop, they don't seem to hold up very well and I will not ever put a set of Denman trailer tires on a trailer as they don't hold up well at all.

Thanks for your reply. I posted this question over on the g503 and oddly enough, got a reply over there from another deuce owner (
). As of now, I'll stay away from the Denmans if only because they're defunct company. In the 9:00X16 department I'm going to need at least 5 tires (M37) but a total of 10 tires is what's ultimately needed (M37 + Ferret). Add to that, five 7:00X16 NDTS for the M151A2 and it's no wonder the tire place is happy to see me.

Tanner
Thanks, I actually keep Cabell's site bookmarked on my computer. Lots of good info there. As much as I would like a set of XLs/XZLs for my truck(s) they simply aren't available stateside. I've tried online and in person with the various (Michelin) tire dealers without success. I know someone over in France who has been to Michelin dealers over there (where they're made) and they can't get them over there either. The "other" tire that I'd really like to have is the "NATO" tread NDT. Like I posted earlier, I've seen both Ferrets & M37s sporting those.

Re: Tires
The STA's are the better tires of the 3 you listed. Titan's are nowhere near the quality of STA. Denman's don't even make the list.

That may be the reason why they are no longer around

Re: Tires
I agree with Charles. STA is the way to go.. Are you after the stock NDT look or does it not matter to you? If not the 900/16 STA Superlug is a great tire in snow, mud, and sand. They will wear far better, last much longer, out perform any NDT style. Titan T Hawks should be good rubber. Well newer rubber anyway..
The 1100/16 XL's and XZL's can be had here in the states but through surplus or private purchase means. A average if your patient is about $200 a tire. The days of a $100 a tire seem to be gone for me up here. I run them on two trucks I have. They perform real good, heck one tire is rated for almost the entire weight of a M37. They do rob allot of power from the poor little 230 engine and 4 low is needed more often. Just my 2 cents

I got my STA's w/ tubes and flaps from Wallace Wade in Texas and have no complaints (but my mileage is limited so don't take my post as absolute gospel)

We don't recommend the 11.00X16 XL's at all with the stock engine in place. It just doesn't have the vitamins to support them. We have used some with our Cummins trucks; they worked great with the extra power and torque that engine offers.

Re: Tires
I was looking at the two remaining NDT's on my truck last night, and they are of the DUNHILL brand, and stamped made in Korea right on the side. Anybody every heard of this manufacturer? I haven't, so my curiosity is up

I've seen them on trucks, but have not run them on my own, thus I have no real experience with them.Master Yota wrote:I was looking at the two remaining NDT's on my truck last night, and they are of the DUNHILL brand, and stamped made in Korea right on the side. Re: Tires
WHEN I GOT MY M, THERE WERE 5 DIFFERENT NTD TIRES MOUNTED ON ITS RIMS. AMONG THEM A HANKOOK, WHICH WAS MADE IN KOREA? COULD DUNHILL BE A HANKOOK SUBSIDIARY? SINCE THEN AND UNTILL NOW, I HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE ONLY SET OF TIRES THAT I EVER CHANGED AND THEY ARE "CHAMPION" 9X16, "T LUG" NDT VERSION 14 PLY. THOUGH THEY ARE 34.5" OVERALL DIAMETER, THEY ARE MORE LIKE 8" WIDE. THEY WERE MADE IN THAILAND.Master Yota wrote:I was looking at the two remaining NDT's on my truck last night, and they are of the DUNHILL brand, and stamped made in Korea right on the side. In case anyone was wondering, I finally heard back from that company over in Europe that has the 9:00X16 Nato tread tires. They want 200.00 Euros for them which is about $276.00 American. Cost to ship a pallet (not sure how many's on a pallet) to me would set me back around $550.00. I would like a set of those for the ferret but at this time, it looks like I have NATO tread tastes with an STA wallet.
