Fuel System Upgrade, I Hope!

Hey Crew.
Well, we had the M-37 out for a drive a couple of days past and found the old non-factory electric fuel pump was weak. I ordered a new Carter Rotary Vein electric pump and a new in line fuel/water separator. I had sent the fuel tank to Gas Tank Renue and it's back installed in like new condition. I'm hoping this will be the end of my fuel problems!!
I had to remove the original light switches from the dash and install a homemade temporary switch panel consisting of three toggle switches to turn on the headlamps, taillamps, and dash lamps. The back of the old plug-in was really full of nasty green corrosion!
All for now but it's really good to be back!

That's good news Tim, did you take any pic's of their mounting location, is the fuel/water separator mounted on the fire wall?

To answer your question, I will not receive the parts until Tues. and will take a few pictures while I'm installing them! Great idea!

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PUMP? ARE THERE ANY CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE THIS APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR ENGINE? DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH THE DISPLACEMENT OR MAX RPM? IT SEEMS LIKE A NICE SETUP. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT :D

OK, here is the short answer! I have used this type of pump on a number of applications in the past. Had excellent results. Here is a note from their web-site.

Rotary vane design
Originally created for military use, this design has been in production longer than any other Carter model. Rotating vanes driven by a heavy-duty wet motor deliver pressure from 4 to 18 psi at a flow rate of up to 100 gallons per hour. This provides excellent lift and prime capability. The pump is available in 6-, 12- and 24-volt versions. It is appropriate for RV, marine, agricultural, industrial and performance applications.

I ran an identical pump in my first M37 and it worked great. The only issue I had was that it needed a fuel pressure regulator, as it would often push fuel past the needle in the carb causing a flooding out condition. In defense of the pump however, the carb hadn't been rebuilt or even serviced in recent memory so that may have contributed to the flooding issue. The addition of a fuel pressure regulator set around 3 psi. did solve the problem though. The pump itself was flawless.

Sir,

I installed that EXACT electric fuel pump into a WM300 Power Wagon this summer at work. Went in like a breeze for me, works great! A little noisey when running, but I prefer that so I don't forget it's running (we use it to correct vapor locks)

I had that pump in 12v, which was causing problems. I replaced it with a 24v facet pump which is totally silent. The Carter pump was really loud, so I definitely knew if I had not turned it on.

SO, TO RUN AN ELECTRIC PUMP YOU NEED TO WIRE IT FROM A DIFFERENT SOURCE? (IE A SWITCH?) WHY NOT WIRE IT FROM THE IGNITION? TURN THE ENGINE PUMP WORKS RIGHT AWAY? RIGHT? :?

In regards to the last post, excellent idea wiring the pump to the ignition switch! Sounds like we have a plan! All the parts arrived today so we begin with the fabrication of the mounting brackets! I'll try to get a few pictures. Remember this one thing, I have two speeds, slow and stopped!

HUMMM... I WAS ACTUALLY ASKING IF IT CAN BE DONE. I DO NOT KNOW IF YES OR NOT. PERHAPS SOMEONE THAT HAS DONE THIS KIND OF WIRING BEFORE MAY CHIP IN? :roll: AS FOR YOUR TWO SPEEDS, IT SEEMS WE BOTH RUN THE SAME "TRANSMISSION" LOL :lol:

Powering the electric fuel pump through the ignition is the common way. Some folks also wire it through an oil pressure switch so the fuel pump is only powered when you have oil pressure, ie. running. Then if you are in an accident, and the ignition is still on, you are not still pumping gas. The only drawback I see to this is you lose the priming feature when you start it up after a period of inactivity, but that could be overcome with an momentary override switch.

Is water in the fuel a commond problem with these trucks?

Hey Crew!
I had water and some stuff I'm not even sure what it was! My truck sat more than it was ever used so the tank was completely full of varnish! I have my brackets made and fit-up is underway but I wimped out! Don't have the heat on in the shop and I got cold! I did take some pictures and will see if I can get them posted on my photo album as I'm not sure how many pictures I should post here??

I have put 4 new pictures in my photo album showing the progress on the mounting bracket for the water seperator/filter and the pump. Will disassemble tomorrow and paint. Hope to have her running soon! Very soon! Tim Powell :!:
