T-case rant

Post by N1VSM »

Changing the fluid in the t-case yesterday. Don't you think that it would have been designed so that the lubricant is a FRU? Sure, draining is easy enough, but filling it was oh such a joy! I need to get a pump or something ... Anyone have a clever shade-tree work around?

I use a tool made for that, it looks like a big syringe with a piece of clear tubing to go into the TC (or tranny, or differentials) They dont cost a lot and are a lot easier.
The Power Wagon master cylinder is the worst though. It is forward of the firewall, but still down at the frame level, with lots of stuff in between you and the fill plug. Really bad setup. I ended up making a new MC cover with 2 ports and plumbed a fill line and a vent line up to the firewall where I could reach it. Has a small reservoir out of a junked car to fill it with. Why didnt the Dodge engineers figure that one out?
Pick up one of those pumps and you will be a happy camper!

I use a suction gun, new production ones like Tim described are available at most auto parts stores, the one pictured is WWII GI issue model.

GOOD EVENING,
You can get a lower outboard lower unit oil change pump for a marine supply or on the computher. They screw on to most gear oil containers and it has a hose that you can put in the fill hose. works great for me. Good Luck, BOB

I bought one of those plastic "syringe" it is so poorly made, the end you attach the hose to is tapered and smooth, as soon as I had gear lube in it, the hose fell off, the end had so much taper that even trying to clamp the hose on, as I tightened the clamp, the hose simply slid off.
Best advice if you purchase one, also purchase small cans of PVC glue and cleaner, glue the hose on first, once you introduce oil its to late.

My gear oil is in a 5 gal bucket. I have a lid with a pump and a long hose. With the M37 it takes soldier 2 to pump the bucket and soldier 1 to hold the hose. But on my 5 tons, just soldier 1 is needed. :D

My gear oil is in a 5 gal bucket. I have a lid with a pump and a long hose. However I do it with one Soldier, that is as long as the Soldier properly places the bucket where they can reach the pump handle.
Thanks,

Field Replaceable Unit. I know - a serious misuse of the term.

(Gee, whiz. Did I really type "beef"? I must be hungry.)

I agree...the MCs on the wm300s and such are a major PITA!

I use a pump that I purchased at Auto Zone! it will fit on a gallon oil jug and comes with a hose and a fitting to hold it in place while your pumping which is really a clean one man job,it works great with all types a lubes and around $10.00 the pump will adapt to quart bottles also.
It's worth looking into.
