Engine Swap: Jeep 4.0L in M37?

Post by custom352 »

Hello. I'm sure a Jeep 4.0L inline 6 has been looked at to repower the M37, but haven't found any info on it.
If it physically fits, the specs look like it would work out great without overworking the original drivetrain.

"1991-1995 4.0L (242 CID) I6 MPI (High Output) - 190 hp (142 kW) @ 4600 rpm, 235 lb·ft (319 N·m) @ 3200 rpm
1996-1999 4.0L (242 CID) I6 MPI (High Output) **Chrysler Block Cast** - 190 hp (142 kW) @ 4600 rpm, 235 lb·ft (319 N·m) @ 3200 rpm"

Has anyone tried this?
Thanks in advance, Matt

I too considered this - but never managed to find anyone who had done it. I would purchase an adapter to run a stouter transmission than the jeep unit, either in 2wd or 4wd and then use the stock tcase, or a heavier duty unit thats fits the new transmission. I'm fairly sure it would fit length wise without too much issues, and an aftermarket rad would be fairly simple. The only issue is the stock Jeep fuel injection and computers can be a wiring nightmare. If an aftermarket wiring kit exists that would be the way to go.

The standard rule of thought on the 4.0L is that its a great engine in whatever it came in - but don't swap it into anything else. I've seen very few 4.0L swaps so I can't give you any more info on whether this is a good idea or not. At the very least, it'll be different.

Good luck!
