Truck No...

Post by Oddjob »

Been a little MIA for a while... The summer heat in the So. Cal. desert is not pleasant to work on vehicles in so I've been trying to recover the markings on my vehicles past life...

One question I have is formerly when my vehicle was assigned to the Air Force the hood numbers were simply A##### but when it was assigned to the army they added a 3 in front of the A... (3A#####) Anyone know of a reason why?

I also might have an extra hood number for a pre 53 Air Force Truck if someone needs one... As they salvaged another door from another AF truck to repair mine at one time...

I've recovered all of my Army markings and now am working on getting to the Air Force ones if they are recoverable...

Hope everyone has been well and made progress on there projects... :D

The hood number / registration number system was entirely different for the Air Force, Navy and USMC. Their numbering systems are published by each service in their regs/manuals specific only to their service.

The Army system used the 7 and 8 digit numbers until about 55 when they switched to the XAXXXX system.

The Air Force used the Army system (occasional adding an F after the USA) until about 1954 when they published their own AXXXX system and then in 55 they switched to the 51AXXXX system where 51 would be the year of manufacturer for the vehicle.

Interesting then perhaps the 3 is for 53... I have no leading 5 but people have been known to take shortcuts...
Thanks Wes...
