New Tires or Tires and Rims

Post by SierraM37 »

Locally, I have found some tires and/or tire/rim combo's for sale.

Option 1 would be to replace my stock rims with these:
tubeless rims (centers welded in tubless 16.5 x 9.75 rims) with 38.5x14.5x16.5 super swampers TSL-SX. 4 ea. with about 70 to 80% tread left. These are listed for $950.

Option 2 would be to buy 5 Michellin XL tires and mount with Radial Tubes. They are listed for a grand.

Would the new (re-centered) rim's be better for future tire options? I'm not going for a 100 point restoration. I've already got 4 wheel Discs and an upgraded MC, converted to 12V and plan to add Power Steering and add seat belts. Other than that, it will look original.

I'd recommend the 5 Michelin XL's (if these are the 11.00x16 size) on stock rims. Get the proper radial tubes/flaps & mount 'em. Check the date codes on them as well -

Another option is to get the Michelin's & mount them on these rims, if they are still available

- this way, you solve your current tire need, and it give you a rim that can be used with future tires.

If you do lots of offroad driving, then nothing will perform like a super swamper. If you do alot of regular driving, with a little bit of offroad, my vote would be for the michelins.

My vote is also for the tubeless wheels. Why fart around with lock rings and tubes and flaps, when you don't have to?
