Is a Fire extinguisher, General Fire Guard, Sure Action, Quick Aid Model 85HD correct for a early M37?

I think after 53, the fire ext. was eliminated. I don't know which model I have, I'll check tomorrow.

Yes, that would be the correct one. I just checked, same thing in my 52. Get your Brasso out and give it some brand new under dash "bling" ....don't use the Brasso on the painted label part...

My fire extinguisher General Fire Guard, Quick Aid Model 85 is panted OD and has a brass label. with a over coat of OD.

It is 98 degrees with thunderstorms just outside or Greensboro, NC.

I have the same extinquisher that Bruce pictured. Mine is a bit older though. It is a 1qt Pyrene from Newark NJ. The guy I got it from was an owner of a hardware/fishing tackle shop and he was having a sale when he retired. I stopped in and noticed the extinguisher hanging on the wall from a nail. I asked him if it was for sale and he hesitated and asked why I was interested in it. I explained that I had been working on a M37 and it still had the original bracket for a carbon tet extingusher. He told me how the extinguisher on the wall was a momento from WW2. It was from a jeep he drove across Europe after he landed in France a couple weeks after D-day. Why he took that puzzled me. I guess it wouldn`t raise to many eye brows if he shipped it home. He handed me the extinquisher and said I could have it for free as he appreciated people saving history.

Any 1qt Carbon tet extinquisher would work in the M37. Many of the extinquishers were Pyrene or General. They had a tendency to disappear as the carbon tet would clean anything and was used extensivly as a stain remover. It was also used for cleaning electrical components like motors and generators. The US Army vehicle field expediency book shows a carbon tet extinquisher being used to clean a generator on a vehicle. They were common in many places from Military vehicles to offices across the country. They pretty much disappeared when it was made public that carbon tet rated very high among substances known to cause cancer. Nasty stuff.

I do remember carbon tet with a " smile " .

When I was in Berlin Germany, 1976 to 1980 it made a great cleaner. I work as a 63B20, wheel mechannic. Worked great to clean weapons as well.

Great story on you fire extinguisher.

I got mine at a Gun Show. You will never know what you will find.

I also recently acquired one of these vintage brass beauties for my M37. I hate having a rack/bracket that is empty! Up here in Ontario, they are quite plentiful! I see them all the time at antique stores ranging in price from $15 to $50. If anyone else wants one, let me know. I can probably find one and ship it to ya.

You dont often see the extinquishers with the vehicle brackets. The ones I have seen in antique stores usually have the stamped steel wall mount if any at all. The M37 bracket would have two cam straps that hold the extinquisher. They should be somewhat available but I really couldnt say as I never looked for one...

Mine was an ebay snag, 15$ quite a while back, the bracket was an Aberdeen flea market catch three semolians, the guy had a few boxes of them.
