Transmission seal

Post by Gerry »

The replacement seal I have for my tranny is the leather type. Is there a better type seal to use than this?
Thanks,
Gerry

Charles do you have to use the sleeve or can you just get the seal?

To put it simply, you can just go with the seal. HOWEVER, if you don't install a sleeve, too, you'll just end up replacing the seal again...and again...and again. The grooved shaft (which the sleeve fixes) will just eat up seals almost as fast as you can put 'em in.

Lifer offers correct info, at around $25 the sleeve is very good insurance that your seal will perform well for many years. Once in a great while I see a really good yoke seal surface, this does not require the use of a sleeve. Most however are grooved, rust pitted, or both, installing a new seal without a sleeve is fruitless in this situation, as it will not stop the leak.
