Head bolt question

Post by powerwagontim »

Working towards reinstalling the head on a donor engine. The engine came to me as a supposed fresh rebuild. I pulled the head to take a peak, and all looked fine. Hardened seats for all valves, cylinders had been sleeved. I stripped all of the accessories off to convert it from an Army engine to an Air Force engine (Grey). Tonight I was wire brushing the head bolts. I noticed that there are 6 accessorie head bolts (Not sure the proper nomenclature, but the ones that are tapped out for a second bolt to thread into to hold an accessorie). Three of them have really deep heads and 3 have normal depth heads. The manual shows 3, one for a vent line clip and 2 for the oil filter. I cant think why there would be 3 more, unless the rebuilder just threw in what was kicking around.
A second thought, the lifting eye goes below the heads of 2 head bolts. It would seem to me that in torquing the 2 bolts with the eye the actual torque would be different on those 2 bolts than the rest of them that are pulling right on the head. It would also seem that the eye should mount on a pair of the accessorie bolts but maybe it wasnt deemed strong enough. Probably splitting hairs here anyway.

GOOD AM I JUST installed the head on the 230 I am rebuilding. Yes there are three of the accessory bolts.
As for the lifting bracket, I too thought the same, that it should be bolted on top of the head bolts, but i installed it as it came off, under two of the head bolts. Good luck BOB

Thanks Glen,

You are exactly right. I just went out and looked at mine. The oil filter bracket goes under the # 9 and # 15 bolt heads.
I'll mark the photos accordingly.

I had to look at mine too, to verify what I was thinking was correct. :)
