PTO driveshaft

Post by N1VSM »

Neve a dull day here. I finally got the U joints off and apart from my PTO driveshaft. When I pulled off the front joint, I found that someone has braised the Woodruff key in place. They did a "great" job, as it all fits together nicely. This bothers me - I can't tell whether they braised the correct "D" key in place (who knows why), or filled the slot and braised a rectangular key on top.
My instinct tells me to get that thing out, clean it all up & put it back the way it should be. On the other hand, maybe thisis because the slot is worn out. Perhaps a trip to a driveshaft place is in order.
Thoughts?

The only way the slot would be worn out is if an incorrect key was used, allowing movement on the shaft. I predict something amiss along those lines-the correct key would have seated nicely in place with no need to be brazed in....
Just my 2 cents,
