Brake adjuster kits questions...

Post by Cal_Gary »

You see from my other post that I solved my driveline problem. In doing the PMCS (that's "preventive maintenance checks and services" for those who may have forgotten) I knew I'd need to replace the right-rear brake adjuster (forward side) and the steel clip that holds the brake shoe in place since it was rusted off.

I was going to do this with the hub broken down last weekend, only to find that it appears the adjuster has to be welded to the adjusting bolt once it has passed thru the backing plate; the two pins that hold the clip in place appear as if they must be "hammered" in like a hot rivet in order to secure the clip.

Am I on target with how this is done? I have the welder to spot-in the adjuster and could use two short nuts and bolts for the clip but would rather do it correctly without resorting to the field modifications.
Thanks,
Gary

No takers huh? OK, I will compress the spring tensioner slightly then pass the adjusting bolt thru the backing plate and will tack the adjuster in.

Gary, I saw your post but didn't reply because I have never had to do anything like that on any of the trucks I have owned over the past 38 yrs. I was hopeful someone who had actually done the work would help you.
It sounds like you are on the right track with the repairs you outlined.

Thanks for your response, Carter.
Before I got my M, Hacker Man plugged the hole with a nut, bolt and flat washer-that'll keep it adjusted (not)!

I don't worry about being ignored here-too many good folks on this forum, brothers and sisters all to me, and like all, I at times won't post if I have no expertise on certain things (like this one which is why I asked).
