Take off drums for sale

I have some used takeoffs that have been sand blasted and look good BUT no way to measure them plus in less you come to NC shipping is the killer. Make me an offer as I want to get rid of them. Otherwise I guess I should turn them in for scrap. They do not look worn to me. but what do I know

You really should measure these, not that hard to rig up a measuring tool. If indeed they are in good condition, they are in demand, so it's worth your while to be able to present the facts about actual condition.

I am listening for suggestions. My biggest micrometer ony goes to 3" and I would guess that there is a bore measurement that should be accurate to .001? Also my cylinder gauge with the 3 legs only measures 5" bores and I have no extender roods to measure if it tapes by .001 or les or more.

If you don't wish to create your own adapter to make it happen, simply take the drums into a local source for checking. Most auto parts stores offer turning service and will also be able to perform an accurate check for you. I suggest doing this because buyers will be slim to none unless you have solid proof of offering good drums for sale. We have many drums here, most of which are not suitable for turning. My experience has told me there are few out there that are not worn too far to turn and stay within specs in the end. Like I said, there is a good market for usable or turnable drums, even with the shipping factor. There simply is not that many good drums to be had. It's been years since I've seen a new one. This simple fact is the one thing that has made the disc conversion so popular, it is practically the only viable alternative considering the scarcity of decent drums.

Dont' forget those M101/M010a2 trailers. They use the M37 drums as a parking brake. As a result, they don't wear out like regular brake drums. Pick up a trailer off GSA and swap you truck's drums for 2 trailer drums - then either sell the trailer or use it. As only a parking brake, a worn drum is fine.

Also, M101 trailer axles come up for sale from civilian axle swaps or M101a3 axle swaps (Chevy 8-lug pattern) - usually ~$100 - grab one for the M37 drums/hubs/brake shoes.

I have not seen a good drum from a trailer in years. Most often the ones on trailers have been turned past spec or they have been run with the brakes on and are warped badly from heat as a result.

My warning is this, don't think you are getting good drums just because they are from a trailer, actually the likelyhood of getting drums that are just as bad or worse than what you are replacing is very high. I wouldn't spend a dime on a trailer drum unless I KNEW the outcome would be good. If you can't pull it and inspect, (measure the ID and check roundness), don't buy it. This is a selling point for crooks, they will say they have no wear at all, they are from a trailer, don't fall for that line.

We have many used drums, you are welcome to come and look through them, check them to your satisfaction. If there is anything you would like, $15 each, and load them up.
