I have come up with another idea that has probably been around since
Ponchus was a pilot.
I was visiting my sled this weekend and I am still chasing the hard starting after 6 weeks with large atomized particles coming from exhaust.
I was adjusting valve lash again and came up with this. It worked great!
You just have to remember to go in reverse firing order.

Basically made from a bunch of junk I had laying around at the Mts. house
I think I will refine it a bit , but it worked a treat.
What say the Bretheren?

I'm not sure what it's supposed to do or how to use it, but it sure is one fine piece of "redneck engineering!" :D

OK, here's how I was using it.
Sorry for the crappy pics they are from my phone.
I set the engine at TDC on #1 I mark the bumper and freeze the degree wheel and lock the pin into the hand crank starter nut. Turn clockwise
till the 240 deg mark is on the mark on the bumper, set the next set of valves then rotate another 120 deg till the 120 mark is lined up on the
bumper and do the next valve . You just have to remember that it will be the reverse firing order 142635.

As far as "Redneck Engineering " goes.
About 15 Yrs ago one of my teenage stepkids was trying to get my goat. He told me that he thought I was a Redneck Hippy. I thought about that for a couple of blinks and said " That is about as good a description of me that anyone has ever made." If you take the good parts of a redneck, family, old timey, down to earth, farmer type; and the good parts of a hippy, nature mellow and earthy. I'm honored that you think so highly of me!

It's a great idea, we have been using that principle for valve adjustments for years, just without the reference chart. We just learned how to sight it. This is simple to build and a great asset for a person who doesn't do the procedure often. It will stop you at the correct spot every time, 2 revolutions of the crank and you are done with all 6. Congrats on a very useful tool that will get the job done right if used properly. Could be made from sheet metal or even cardboard for occassional use. I don't get your reverse theory however. If you start off with #1 on TDC, 1/3 revolution or 120 degrees will bring #5 to TDC, another 1/3 revolution will bring up #3, with another 1/3 bringing you back to TDC on the pointer which brings up #6, and so on with #2 and #4. I'm afraid you lost me on the reverse order thing.

You are of course correct as far as rotation.
It is the normal firing order.
I used the distributor to find the cylinder and assumed the wrong direction
of rotation in my description. Sort of like reverse and backwards both at once
luckily for me rendering my job the right way round. -(-)=+
