I need help planning my vacation

Well, we are coming up on our 10 year anniversary in April. The wife and I have been talking about taking a cruse or an all inclusive resort.
I an terrified of spending a week bored out of my mind, I'm rather high strung and don't enjoy sitting still, I'd rather spend 2 hrs in a dentists chair than 2 hrs laying around getting a tan, to make matters worse I suck at sports. If I could spend the week in the engine room I'd be happy, but I expect security and insurance wont let me.
Every vacation I've ever been on went to museums, battlefields, and other boring but stimulating things.
If you've been on a cruse how was it? should I go, or push for Hawaii so I can tour Purl Harbor, or D.C. and tour the Smithsonian, Or if you have any other cool places to go further off the beaten path, please let me know.

For our 30th my wife and I went on a 6 hour cruise aboard the Liberty ship "John W Brown". We cruised up and down the Cheasapeake Bay . I DID go to the engine room and had free run of almost the entire vessel, we were back in 1942! I was in heaven, it was cold and a bit rainy but we both loved it. We kept going back to the engine to warm up near that big steam engine. I know this is not what many people want to do especially women but we will do it again soon. I know it's not a real cruise but we went back in time! Oh yeah, a WWII Mitchell bomber buzzed us several times as part of the program, normally a dogfight with WWII fighters would be staged but the weather did not permit it, luckily for us the bomber made it. Enjoy whatever you two do!

PLUS YOU ARE ONLY ABOUT AN HOUR FROM THE MYAN RUINS. A LITTLE CULTURE TOOOOO. WENT MID SEPT, AIR AND ALL INCLUSIVE WAS $1600 FOR TWO OF US. GREAT TIME

They offer week long cruises in Southeast Alaska. I'm one of the captains and have as much fun as the guests do. We spend a week looking at glaciers, whales, bears, hiking in the woods, kayaking, fishing for halibut, salmon, fly fishiing etc, etc etc.

Its sort of a eco cruise -look at nature - we don't visit any towns or cities. Anchored up in a quiet cove every night - max number of passengers is 20 or 24 depending on which ship you go on.

Plus we could talk M37's for the week. The ships crew just doesn't get the M37 addiction, although I do try to convert them.

Well I consider myself lucky as my wife is into photography, wildlife and nature so we plan our vacations accordingly. Boring you say? No so fast my friends-patroling each and every back road imaginable leads to all kinds of HMV "finds" and I have my camera ready for all of those. We also plan stops at all of the area surplus stores and with some fellow HMV owners, just to stop by and say "hi".

I still covet an old abandoned WWII halftrack that we discovered on one such trip- still calls me, waiting to be rescued, and I've revisited it a number of times. The cargo area is toast but the rest appears to be intact and complete. Sure it will need new tracks but those are available, just not within my budget.

Sorry, I will not reveal the location-call me selfish on that one-I might still recover it one day!

Well, I for one would NOT plan an anniversary around my hobby. That's a good way to wind up on the wife's shit list. Plus I thinks its very tacky......Same as taking those Christmas card pictures with your truck, or your stupid dog(like my sister did), or whatever and sending them to all relatives, etc. You may think its cool, but trust me the rest of the family and your friends will think you're a real douchebag.

Women take anniversaries way more serious than we do.. Trust me, plan something that you both can enjoy. Maybe a little of both's interests, but don't do like the guy above and go on the liberty ship ride unless she absolutely wants to.

No need to explain yourself. I merely used the example of the Liberty ship to convey a point. Hey if your wife is into it, more power to ya, you're one of the few with a wife who's into that sort of thing. Wasn't trying to hammer your choice of anniversaries. However I often see where people inject their hobbies or their interests into every facet of their life, and that to me is ridiculous......I for one have many hobbies and don't allow any one to consume me. And I wouldn't dream of an anniversary where my hobby is involved because I know my wife isn't into guns, or army trucks or airplanes....

And BTw - I'm a licensed pilot too, and I too would be bored to tears on a cruise. I don't do boats........

Well Nickathome your point is well taken.
Fortunately my wife is a keeper, I once dragged her to EAA, now she drags me.
Its looking like were going to Hawaii, and yes, if we do, we will see all the war stuff, but never fear if there's a quilt shop, fabric or yarn store to be found anywhere on the islands, she will find it.

I took it once from WI to Los Angeles, and they treated us like kings the whole way there and back. food was good, the observation car was great for sightseeing, and you meet all kinds of interesting people. It's not too much more than airplane ticket if I remember right.

I was going to suggest road trip - just for the fun and whimsy of it, but thats a much better idea.

Easy and cheap alternative vacation plan! Go to Chicago! You can spend an eternity in the Museum of Science and Industry while your wife takes a "do-it-yourself" cruise on Lake Michigan in a rental rowboat!

Well the wife and I decided and made reservations for a week in Washington D.C. I know its not exotic or for that matter even warm, but it is the vacation we planed to take 3 days after 9/11.

Should be plenty to do, and the cherry trees might even be blooming! There is the Smithsonian, Air and Space, American History, Natural history. In nearby Silver Hill, there is the Garber Restoration facility (Air and Space), and in Quantico the Marines museum.
