Bummer. No parade for me on Wednesday

Post by N1VSM »

Bad. That's the only way to describe it. Picked the kids up from school, the old M suddenly makes way more noise than it should - sounded like the exhaust manifold blew a huge hole - that throaty growl. I hop out & clog the tailpipe - no exhaust leak anywhere. Hmm ... ok, thinks I, we'll limp home & I'll investigate later. A few miles later - stall once - restarts fine, a few more miles, stall twice. Little rougher to get going. A few more miles & she dies. Complete silence from under the hood - too spooky. Hit the starter, hear it engage with gusto - nothing turns. One AAA flatbed ride home & here I am. I'll see what's up later.

If you can, drive your M37 in a parade for me on 11/11.

Without actually hearing the noise, myself, it would be very difficult to guess what the cause might be. It doesn't "sound" good to me, though. :(

I am sorry to hear about your engine. :( Let us know what you find out. I am curious. I hope it is not too serious.

What you have described does not sound good at all!
Have you checked the dipstick to see if there are any metal flakes mixed with the oil?
When you investigate further let us know what you find.

Sorry to hear of that, N1. You can still fly the flag on her tomorrow as a static display, though. That's what I'm doing.

Ouch

Symptom: engine wouldn't turn
tx: let it sit for a week & try again
note: got her to turn over today with the engine guy right there
preliminary diagnosis: spun main bearing
rx: Rebuild

Will keep y'all posted with post-op notes.

PS oil was clean (no metal chunks), no leaks. I think that I clutched immediately as the engine seized, so I didn't feel a skid.
