TRANSFER CASE

Wanted to buy- Transfer Case for 1954 M152 CDN. Same part # as M-37. I'd like to get a rebuilt, but depending on price may have to get a reliable TO. Mine is stuck in 4 WD. (Shaft slipping on shifter fork?) I don't have enough room on the kitchen table to rebuild this one. Preferably in New England. Thanks, Rick

Most likely the issue you have going on isn't a huge deal to fix. Pulling the rear drive unit off the case will give the needed access to fix what you mentioned. Very possibly it may just be a backed out set screw that secures the fork to the shaft or possibly a broken fork, either is easy to fix in a hour or 2. I would certainly look into this before buying a take out. It's very easy to get another case with more issues than you have now when buying take-out components that have not been gone into.

I agree with Charles about take outs. take outs are a crap shoot. If it is just slipping, yank it out and see what you have. I have a dozen takeouts if Tim doesn't hook you up.

Thanks for the responses. Background is this. It has always been stiff or reluctant to shift in and out of 4WD. I figured this was just the nature of the beast until I got the M56 and appreciated how easily IT shifted. A couple of weeks ago I had to pull up the muddy side driveway in 4WD and the next time I moved it was amazed at how easily it shifted back to 2WD. Hey this is great! Slides right in and out! Well yes the linkage and shaft slide right in and out, however it's still in 4WD. So that led me to the manual(s) to speculate that the fork is slipping on the shaft. It doesn't make those frightening metal crunching noises which would lead me to think bits and parts are rolling around loose. The manuals don't really discuss the concept of pulling only part of the transfer case apart for a field repair. Either it works, needs adjustment or gets yanked out and rebuilt in a depot on a bench. Well I don't have a depot or much of a bench for that matter, so I figured it would be easier just to switch it out with another unit. I'll take a go at Charles' suggestion and see whats up, though I imagine his time estimate is based on working inside a building with a concrete floor, not in the dirt outside. I'd love to get John's NOS case, but with shipping I'd be looking at an investment that rivals my mortgage payment.
