My new M-37 serial number problems

Post by Strud »

I am attempting to register my new 1954 M-37. the plate seems to be a replacement plate and the serial # 80620315 is incorrect by all info I have found. It should be an 802xxxxx number. Is this correct? It is titled in Minnesota with this incorrect number. All of the info on the plate is engraved with a hand engraver not stamped like some I have seen. Any info and help would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there some other location for this number other than the plate on the dash. Thanks in advance.

The serial number should be stamped into the frame on the driver's side, just ahead of the front wheel, visible from the outside. I have never seen or heard of an 'engraved' serial # on the data plates. Don't think the military ever did it that way.

Likely this is your issue. The dash plate is not the complete VIN#. It is the numerical sequence of manufacture. The complete VIN# is on the frame rail as has been mentioned. The last 5-6 digits of the frame rail# should match the # on the data plate if nothing has been changed from original.

Thanks for the replies. I will look tonight and hopefully be able to register it and also I will take some pics of it. I have restored a 53 Willys Truck and own 5 other Willys jeeps so this is my first project on the military side. thanks again for the info.
