My M37 Off-Road Flexible Fenders

Post by W_A_Watson_II »

Fabricated and Installed my Off-Road Flexible Fenders, hopefully no more fixing rear fender dents from traveling down the narrow Jeep trails.. Made from 1/4" x 12" wide x 71" long Grain Elevator Belting. There are a few extra holes, but they should do the trick. Will likely have to make a small bracket for both ends to keep the curve correct, as they curve in towards the tire at the ends. It would be nice if they would take the Paint, will have to see what other types of paint are out there for Rubber and if It comes in the right color.

If you really want to, I would go ahead and paint the belting with an enamel without a hardner.
It will tend to fade and crack with time.
THey really do not look bad the way they are.

I think that's a great idea, my opinion about paint is that they look good just the way they are. Black and OD seem to go well together. Curving in toward the tires gives them a sculptured custom look that I like. Just my .02 cts. worth.

Looks Good

I'm thinking Tom might be onto something there, no hardener = flexible finish?

The BASF Limco 123 urethane paint we use offers a flex agent that can be blended into the mix for use on the flexible bumpers of todays vehicles. I'm sure all major finish manufacturers would offer a flex agent product as well. Should be easy to get from any reputable automotive paint supplier.

Charles is on the right path, today's bumper covers are a Reaction Injection Molded (RIM) flexible part that takes paint. Go to the local automotive paint store and tell them that you are going over rubber - not sure if this would work.

I like the flex idea, and they look good as is. I can see from the front bumper that you get into tight places! LIKE THE TIRES on the good looking combat wheels, what brand and size are the tires?

THANKS for the help feedback, and appreciation of the idea. Back in 79 I used a 4" wide strip of elevator belting to build an air dam/deflector for the bottom of the front bumper on my Dodge Magnum. It worked great, and if I parked too close to a curb, no damage.

I'm going to ask the body shop that just fixed my two rig what he thinks about the new additives and the rubber belting. I might just take several of yours advice and leave them as is.

The Tires Super Swampers (IROK 39.5x13.50-17LT), and they are mounted to a custom built set of MRW Marsh Racing Wheels Bead Locks. the Tires are great!
Thanks,
Will
