M101a1 trailer

As luck would have it I won an m101a1 trailer on ebay today. Of course this will require a road trip from MD to SC to pick up next weekend. My question is how many of you have these. And next question did I make a mistake buying this to pull behind my m37. I know it is slow but will it move at all.

I have two and they are propper to tow behind the M37. The wheels are also the same. We bought our nice one in Maryland. My son who is stationed at Dover DE drove down and picked it up. Going to tow it to AZ next summer. The other was bought from a ranch auction here in AZ but it is pretty rough no side boards and dented up but still a good work trailer. They can haul 3/4 ton and if you pull the bolts on the tongue and lock the brakes they will dump Hope you have fun with yours. It's a cool trailer.

I used to take my M-101 and make a 20 hr round trip to Denver CO. They tow wonderfully at high speeds, and gosh, look at those wheel bearings compared to any other trailer that you can buy today.

Thats great to know that there are others with these. Years ago my dad had one. He got it forom a friend who bought a "large crate" at an govt auction not knowing what was in it. Inside was an m37 and a m101a1. His friend kept the truck for hunting and my dad got the trailer. As luck would have it after many years of hauling firewood and not cleaning it out it rusted out. I plan on trailering my trailer home. Mostly for legalities, but I am wondering how slow my m37 with 11r16's on it will be with the m101a1 behind it.

How well does the dumping part work? Anyone with hands on experience like hauling gravel or sand and being able to dump it. Sounds like what I need.

I have 2 M101 trailers. This one I got with a Marine Corp truck I bought. It was about as perfect as you could get, just added new canvas and tires. I did replace the wood. No dings, dents or rust. Hi Bill I notice that your trailer has the paper clip lift hooks Must be something the marines only did. The ones on mine look to have been done after the trailer was delivered.

Used the dump on mine - the front mounts on mine stuck - so wen I backed up to dump, the wheels skidded.

Looks like the army rarely used the dump feature on mine. I need to reduce the friction on the brackets - I used a pry bar to get to dump and had to jump on the trailer front to get it to go down again.

I do plan to replace the dump bolts with big push pins or clevis pins - the bolts are a pain to use with the nylon lock nuts.

I have a 51 Coronet 230 which has a little more power than the T245. My truck can't get out of its own way when I pull the loaded trailer. I put 1500lbs in the trailer and the low power engine and 11.00 x 16xl tires ruined the truck's acceleration. I spent most of the time 15-25mph. The long hill just before my block normally slows me down to 3rd gear by the crest. With the loaded trailer, I used 2nd gear from 1/2 way up.

Do not get me wrong, I really like the trailer. It is almost as nice as the Ben Hur I now regret selling. The 1-ton Ben Hur was easier to back up, but the M101a1 matches my M37 wheels, dumps, cost less, and fits wider loads.

If it is the same M101 that I was watching on ebay, I think you got a pretty good deal. The trailer seemed to be in good condition. It will look good behind your M37. Someday I will get one for my M37.

This is a good time to buy the M101 trailers - prices plummeted since last spring.
