Spark Plug gap with electronic ignition?

Post by John Mc »

I'm running a Pertronix MV-161A electronic ignition in my 251 engine. I thought I read somewhere that you should use a different plug gap with electronic ignition as compared to what is recommended for a points & condenser system, but I can't find that reference now.

The manual calls for .028 to .033 gap with the standard ignition system. I'm pretty sure I'm in that range now. Engine is running fine. Just curious if it's worth looking at changing things.

John Mc,
If you’re running the military wires I’d suggest leaving the gap stock. On multiple occasions I’ve had ignition failures due to a bad plug. I had a plug that took excessive voltage to fire. This lead to one fried lead and one fried cap.

I also gave up on Pertronix after a unit died on me and I was told by the manufacturer that they would not tolerate being run in systems w/o suppression wires for long.

Thanks, Andy. I do have the stock wires. 7000 miles on the ignition so far with no problems.
