crankcase vent line connection

When I got my truck, the vent tube coming back from the PCV valve was simply attached to the barb on the engine block fitting with a short length of hose and 2 clamps. Hopefully the image uploaded with this post....
Was this how they were normally connected? The fact that there's a rather purposeful fitting on the block leads me to believe it was originally attached differently. Any ideas? Thanks.

There is a steel vent tube that flares into that fitting on the rear of the block. It extends forward and bends 90 degrees to the right side of the vehicle where it connects into the vent tube coming down. Let me try to find a picture. From the looks of your engine, you'll be bending a fair amount of tubes if your engine was missing them. Do you have the other vents tubes?

I have all the original vent lines and tubing. It looks kludged together to me, but I understand it was designed to be easily field serviceable by even the most mentally challenged mechanic!
My question pertains more specifically to that 90 degree steel line you mentioned. On my truck, that steel line just butted up against that fitting on the block and was secured with a short length of hose and clamps as per the image. The fitting on the block almost looks like a quick-disconnect fitting. I look forward to images of anyone else's setup. Thanks!

Looks like a compressed air quick connect to me. I have an odd one just like it but have no idea where it came from or where the female side is....

that's what I think too. Still can't find a diagram of the correct fitting in any of my manuals. It's not a big deal, just curious really. I may just use a double flare connection and make a new vent line from the metering valve back....

M2 - sorry the photo does not show that well, but as you can see the whole set-up is flared fittings. Off the block is a female flare that connects to an "L" shaped flared tubing that come forward along the block and then makes a 90 degree bend out to the brass elbow shown. The tubing was just sandblasted but hopefully you can make it out. We restored our vehicle with the complete fording kit which shows the one shutoff valve and the OD green mounting bracket. The silver painted piece is the one way check valve that screws into the brass 90. The nipple goes into the intake manifold. I'll try to take another photo later to show your joint.
