Battery Cable Specifications

Post by LegionPiper »

Hi there folks,

I had a run through the TMs and could not find a reference to the sizes and lengths of the Battery Cables ?
They look like they might be 1/0 Gauge ?

Does anyone know how much Current is pulled by the Starter when it's cranking ?

Finally, has anyone installed accessories that required 4 or 2 Gauge wire that needed to be attached to the POS side ?
How did you approach it ?

Thanks

I don't know the answer to this, but the required cable size will most likely be different for a 12V vs a 24V system

Thanks John !

I've hunted around as I vaguely recall someone posting directions on how to build new cables.
It sure would be nice to track down a TM 9-1808A-2 Electrical System book.

I was able to find the following:
" #2 grade fine stranded cable would be plenty in a typical stock M37 application "
" Check out NAPA as they have the #2.0 they are 7/16 DIAM."

( My truck is still 24v )

suggest just taking your needed length to a local alternator/starter rebuild shop, and let them make up what you need. They have all the big crimping tools to do it. NV

I used 2/0 welding cable on mine. Welding cable has many more smaller strands and is more flexible and carries more current. But the insulation is thinner then on your normal Battery cables.

on most of my truck's wiring, small gage to big gage, I protect with one sort or another protective wrap or covering. Lots of choices, and use grommets if I need to pass thru a steel panel. Plus lots of "holders" with stainelsss small bolts, drilled and tapped. NV
