What to put between the hinge and the cowl (hood)

Getting ready to reinstall the hood hinges and was wondering if anyone has installed these with something between them. When I took them off there was nothing but rust there, pretty sure the factory put nothing (not too sure there was even paint). Kind of wanting to put something- just don't know what.

Mine are metal on metal-never considered putting anything in between, and I don't recall any material going there in any of my manuals.

nothing on mine either, just treat like any other rust prone spot, brush down to good metal, some anti-rust treatment, some primer, paint, and bolt it back together. On my truck, there was surface rust up under the dash, where I couldn't clean or paint, so got some Cavity Coater, which is spray on wax-like coating to inhibit rust in hard to reach areas, KBS coatings has all sorts of metal treatments. I spray it where I can't get to, like inside my doors, etc. HC

I have a lot of paint there now, just didn't want this to happen again

That rust has nothing to do with the hinge mount/screws. What you have pictured is the common cancer caused by the use of the felt strip on top of the support(s) underneath and sandwiched between the cowl sheet metal. I think the manufacturer was looking for the material that could hold the most moisture for the longest period of time when they installed it as an insulator.
BUT DAMN NICE REPAIR !
