Trans Inspection Q?

After running around the block for a few days on shakedown, we removed the tub and are getting ready to paint it. While we had the truck down, we drained the coolant to fix a small leak on the water pump which we had installed new with a dry paper gasket -now adding water pump gasket sealant. I know that we had a tough 2-3 shift which you guys say is a trans problem. Braving the unknown, we are planning to remove the top of the trans to take a look. We will drain the oil and check for any metal objects laying in the bottom. I will look up the prior posts on checking for loose/slop. Beside the drain plug and top cover, anything else we should look to remove while the thing is installed in the truck?
